History room H-m-Ses A Spring Garden Tour The Garden Club of America's 1986 convention creates an opportunity for national and local visitors to see Sewickley's most beautiful gardens. By Joe Smith In May, Sewickley bursts into bloom. This year, the event will mean more than ever to those who toil lovingly and tirelessly in their gardens for the delight of visitors, family and themselves because five of Sewickley's most spectacular gardens will be on private and public tours this month. On Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, 600 delegates to the Garden Club of America's 1986 annual meeting, held this year in Pittsburgh, will take private tours of gardens at the homes of J. Judson Brooks, Mrs. B. F. Jones, III, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McLean, III and Mr. and Mrs. David B. Oliver, II. On Wednesday, May 21, these four gardens, along with that belonging to Mr. and Mrs. William Boyd, Jr. will be open to public tours sponsored by Sweetwater Art Center. The Sweetwater tour, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is a fund-raising event to promote programs of the art center. Another event open to the public will be the Garden Club of America's Plant Exchange, which will be held on Monday, May 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Urban Room of the Westin-William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh. The Garden Club of America's 1986 annual meeting is the first one held in Pittsburgh in 38 years and will run from May 18 to May 21. Some 600 delegates from 186 clubs from almost every state, as well as the District of Columbia, will be shown the city of Pittsburgh and why it has been rated "America's Most Liveable City." Mayor Richard Caliguiri will welcome the delegates at the official opening on May 19. Headquartered at the Westin-William Penn, the meeting will have as its hosts the Garden Clubs of America's local affiliates, the Garden Club of Allegheny County and The Village Garden Club of Sewickley. The convention will feature conservation and horticultural meetings, the plant exchange and a seminar entitled "Confluence: Use and Abuse of Our Rivers." Additional events include visits to Carnegie Institute, Phipps Conservatory, Hunt Botanical Library, tours of private homes and gardens in Pittsburgh and the garden tours in Sewickley. Founded in 1913 by 12 garden clubs, The Garden Club of America has grown to a membership of 186 clubs and 15,000 individual members.
