THE SEWICKLEY BOROUGH 1j <0 BULLETIN 3 _J -C ^2 VOLUME 2 NUMBER 2 SUMMER 1980 ire 741-4111 Ambulance 741-7410 Pol i ce 741-4111 C^CO Bo rough Manager's Office 741-4720 Census '80 Preliminary data from the Federal Census Bureau shows Sewickley Borough's population decreased in the last ten years by 15.4%. The unofficial count, which is subject to local review, shows the 1980 population to be 4,787 persons. The 1970 population was 5,660, a decrease of over 800 persons. The census results showed there were 2,215 housing u- nits (homes or apartments) in 1980, an increase of almost 100 over 1970's 2,117. Sewickley is cross-checking its records against the Federal census figures to determine their accuracy. However, preliminary indications are that the size of Sewickley households has decreased in the past decade. 1970 Population 5660 Housing units 2117 Population 4787 (-15.4% Decrease) W<5d wa^d|ymaSunidSknttrkon Jul Pgiesident Robert B> Housing units 2215 (+4.6% Increase) going down... A major step in demolition of the old Sewickley Bridge was taken July 9 by U. S. Steel's American Bridge Division when the 800-ton center span was lowered onto two barges in the Ohio River and floated away. Dismantling of the 68-year-old bridge between Sewickley and Coraopolis will be followed by construction of a new span at the same site. American Bridge is contractor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project. The 350-foot-long center span is the only section of the old bridge which will be removed intact, according to Tom Owens, construction engineer for American Bridge. All other sections are being dismantled piece by piece. The center section was lowered with blocks and wire rope by means of two large hoists placed on the bridge deck, one near each of the two river piers. American Bridge installed two falsework bents (temporary supports) to balance the bridge once the center span was removed. The bents, one on each side, can be jacked up to relieve the load on the pier at the end of the bridge truss as demolition progresses. : The new bridge, like the old, will be about 1,850 feet long. It will include two, 12-foot-wide lanes with four- foot shoulders and a five-foot pedestrian walkway. The original piers will be used for support, although they must be modified for the wider, new span. The Sewickley Bridge, which has-been restricted to a three-ton weight limit, was closed to traffic May 14. The new bridge is scheduled to open in the Fall of 198L "^
