Miss Nell Burkett. daughter of Mrs. Emma Burkett, of East End. and Wilbur Simpson, of this place, were married Saturday evening, February 11, at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. A. E. Norton, of Rochester, N. Y., Rev. D. D. McLauren, of the Second Baptist church, of Rochester, officiating. Miss Louise H. Witherell was maid of honor, Arthur E. Norton. Jr., was best man and Margaret Norton ringbearer. The bride was gowned in wnite silk and carried a shower boquet of white roses. Her maid also wore white silk and carried a boquet of pink roses. The wedding ceremony, which took place in the Second Baptist church, was performed in the presence of about twenty guests. After congratulations had been extended an elaborate wedding dinner was served. The bride's table accomodated twelve persons, and the color scheme of pink and white was carried out In the bouse decorations. The wedding was not known of here until this week, and as the bride and groom are both popular with a large circle of acquaintances In Punxsutawney and Llndscy, the news came as a genuine surprise. Mr. Simpson, who la an employe In the B. R. & P. freight office, returned to Punxsutawney last week, and Mrs. Simpson is expeoted home to-day. The railroad* and street car lines were also seriously handicapped by the heavy fall of snow. On Thursday and Friday all trains were from thirty minutes to four hours behind time. To make matters worse the mercury went down ito 16 degrees below zero ThuradaV night. The cold was accompanied by a fierce gale which stopped traffic on the 11. R. & P railroad for several hours, as it was impossible for the freight crews to work. The storm continued on Friday. and Its strength was such that a load of hay which was being brought to town was overturned by the wind, near the fair grounds. The street cars which are usually crowded on Saturday, handled fewer passengers last Saturday than any day during the past year. Although the thermometer has registered much rolder weather In past years than that which we have recently experienced, ii is seldom that It has endured for such a long period without a break For this reason ico for commercial purposes is abundant and ran be found on any body of water from twenty ' inches to two feet thick Those who were auccessful In getting here, and were interviewed on the subject, without an exception, report the deepest snow they have ever seen. One farmer who came in a sleigh from a point nine miles away, is confident that of the number of miles traveled, at least seven lay through the fields, the roads being utterly impassable. Many instances have been reported from all directions, by telephone, of farmers being compelled to turn back, having encountered drifts In the road from Ave to seven fet deep aX points where they could not take to the fields. Some of those who did get here Saturday had had all of the experience they could stand, and remained in town over Sunday. On account of the unprecedented depth of the snow hereabouts, last Saturday waa an exceptionally dull trade day In Punwutawney. It is doubtful if a score of farmers reached town that day in sleds and sleighs, whereas of a Saturday they usually come in by the hundreds. The deceased who was married to Miss Catharine Toy IS years ago. Is survived by a widow and four (laughters. He is also survived by his father, five sisters and four brothers David N. Stiver, of near Juneau, Indiana county, died of heart failure Saturday, February 11, aged 46 years, seven months and 24 days and was buried in Pine Cemetery Monday, February 13, Rev. P. D. Steelsmith officiating at tho funeral. Mr. Stiver had not been feeling well for about three months but his condition before the day of his death was at no time such as to give occasion for alarm until the day of his death when, while sitting in a chair eating nil apple, he suddenly expired. Mr. Stiver was highly respected by nil who knew him nnd for many years had been a faithful and consistent member of the Evangelical church at ! Marchand.
