EBERHART, A Question of Exchange. | New York Huu.| We wonder whether Governor-General Blanco and the Sagasta Cabinet are more disposed to-day than they were day hefore yesterday to consider the advisability of releasing certain Americans whom they hold as prisoners of war. For example, there is Mr. Ilobson, lately in command of the Merrimac. Until quite recently, it appears, in the judgment of Governor-General Blanco and the Madrid authorities, we have held as prisoner of war no Spaniard equivalent for purposes of exchange to Assistant Naval Constructor Richmond Pearson Hobson of the United States Navy. What do they think to-day ? Would they regard Admiral Don de Cervera y Topete, Count of J ere/ and Marquis of Santa Ava, for instance, as a fair exchange for Mr. Hobson ? tl.ondon Truth.] I regard a sense of humor as one of %the most precious gifts that can be vouchsafed to a human being. He is not necessarily a better man for having it, but he is a happier one. It renders him indifferent to good or bad fortune. It enables him to enjoy his own discomfiture. Blessed with this sense he is never unduly elated or cast down. No one can ruffle his temper. No abuse disturbs his equanimity. Bores do not bore him. Humbugs do not humbug him. Solemn aim do not impose on him. Sentimental gush does not influence him. The follies of the moment have no hold on hitn. Titles and decorations are but childish baubles in his eyes. Prejudice does not warp his judgment. He is never in conceit or Dut of conceit with himself. He abhors all dogmatism. The world is a stage on which actors strut and fret for his edification and amusement, and he pursues the even current of his way, invulnerable, doing what is right and proper according to ids lights, but utterly indifferent wnether what he does finds approval or disapproval from others. If Hamlet bad had any sense of humor he would not have been a nuisance to himself and to all surrounding him. Discount Sale, p r n & <D [New York Sun.J The Democrats of Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Tennesse held their State conventions on Wednesday, and all of them were controlled by the Bryanite element of the party. In Pennsylvania a platform plank reaffirming the principles of the Chicago platform and extolling Bryan as the "tribune of the people," offered by the minoritv member of the committee, was rejectea by a vote of 238 to 1S4 ; but George A. Jenks, specifically the Bryanite candidate for Governor, was nominated by 306 to 116 for Gordon, a Gold Democrat. Moreover, absurdly enough, all of the Gordon phalanx supported the rejected Bryanite free silver plank, while the Jenks majority voted against it. This was because the game of the J enks delegates was to fight the campaign on "State issues" solely. That is, the majority simply played the trick of hiding away their Bryanite principles with a view to temporary expediency. [Pittsburg I'ottt.J We think the governorship may be considered settled, so far as the nomination of the Democratic State convention will settle it. Mr. James M. Guffey. who had assurances of the support of a large number of delegates, possibly a majority, formally withdrew as a candidate at the meeting of the delegates from Allegheny county on Saturday, and in a graceful way suggested that aa General Coffroth, of Somerset, had also withdrawn, this left but one western candidate in the field, George A. Jenks, of Jefferson county. In 1 strong terms Mr. Guffey urged the nomination of men of the strongest character and tested party fidelity for all places on the State ticket The Allegheny delegates adopted a resolution pledging Mr. —Fine color printing a specialty at this offlee.Ilk .■ — SHOES — Keg.
