Clothing Trade op PRwwMrw, HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE LEADER IN THE Washington, Aug. 27.—There were but 50 members present when the House was called to order this morning, but a quorum was obtained after 10 minntes delay. The oponents of the lard bill, led by Mr. Mason, of Illinois, at once began filibustering. The filibustering led to a personal quarrel between Mr. Beckwitb, of Illinois, and Mr. Wilson, of Washingiugton. It almost led to blows. Wilson struck Bock with lightly on the breast, but Representative Williams, of Ohio, anxious to stop the affray, seized Mr. Beck with from behind and forced him into his seat with considerable vigor. At this Backwith turned his attention to his supposed assailant in the rear, and (t required the efforts of two or three Representatives to prevent a collision. Mr, Williams succeeded in assuring Mr. Beckwith that he had no hostile intentions, and the hit tcr resumed his tent. The incident was over in a few sicouds and added bnt little to the excitement then existing, but it | was cause for jeeiing laughter among the Democrats who witnessed it. The eagle and mace of the Sergeant-at-Arms were hurried down to tho scene of the conllict, and at lt3 appearance all was quiet. He escaped arrest. A jear later he shot and killed an old farmer, near Biidgepoit, Ala., because he resented an insult ottered his daughter by Smith. In 1887 he was working near this city. While walking into town one evei inj; with an aequaintance he met a negro. "Watch that negro fall," he remarked, and drawing a pistol he shot him dead. Iu 1888 Smith fell out with John Speers, living near New Castle Ala. He went to Speei's boarding house, and after killing him, shot the landlady and Hennis Colly, a sick guest, who ha<1 witnessed the crime. He was sentenced in the Colly case last fail but the case was taken to the Suprtmo Court and reversed on a technical error. The filibustering led to a personal quarrel between Mr. Beckwitb, of Illinois, and Mr. Wilson, of Washingiugton. It almost led to blows.
