• .- ; 0 6 ? THE WEEKLY RECORDER. aaVaWTSBsTTB YKAB HOME F1B8T-THB WOBLD AITBHWAHDB. VOL. XVII. NO. :*3. CONSHOHOCKEN, PA., 8ATTJRDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1886. AUTUMNAL. D"BAM8. BATABD TATLOH. W lieu the maple turns to crimson. And tbe ■austral to gold ; When the srnUans In tbe meadow, And tie aster on the wold; When the moon 1B lapped In vapor. And the night Is frosty cold. When the obestnut burr- are opened, And the acorns drop like hail. And 1 ■ i- drowny air In startled With th- t!.moping of Ihe flail— With the drumming of the pirtrldge, And the whistle ol the quail. Through tho rustling woods I wanker, Through the Jewels of the year. From the yellow uplands culling, Seeking her » ho la still dear ; She Is ik- in me In the autumn, She, the beautiful, Is near. Through the smoke ot burning summer, W hen tho weary wind . are still, I o^n see her m tbe valley, 1 can hear her on the bill In the splen lor of the woodlands. In the whlaper of tbe rill. for tbe shores of earth and heaven Meet and mingle In the blue ; She can wander down the glory To the places that she knew. Where the happy lover wandered In tbe days wben life was true. So 1 think when life is sweetest, And i he world Is m holly fair. She may sometimes steal upon me Through the dimness of the air. With the cross upon her bosom. And the amaranth in her hair. Onoe to meet her, ab ! to meet her, And to hold her gently fast Till I blessed her, till she hlersed me— That were happiness at last; That were bliss beyond our meetings, In tbe autums of tbe past I — Weil C/utler Local Ntws. He Laughed Out. He wan from tbe East, and if he was not an ex-detective, he had at least a right lo be called a philosopher. He was buzzing around tbe depot with a suspicious looking young man, and making a great show of a fat wallet, and finally tbe ppeoial officer stepped up to him and said, "My friend, who is this youug man?" "I think he Is a pickpocket," was tbe prompt reply. "Where are you sroltig?" "To Chicago, and he has just pur-chased his ticket for the same point." "If you think he Is a eusp'ciouB character why do you trald in his company?" "Himply to beat him." •How?" "He goes to Chicago because I'm going. He means to pick my wallet between here an j there. He had to scrape bis pockets to buy the ticket. I have two wu lets just alike. About halfway to Cbicag-> i;shall let him get bold of tbe one stuffed with paper He will leave the train at the first sta-tion aftSi. He will have no money. Bud no friends, and be mad enough to burst when he sees my trick. I'm just cracking my sides over the way bis euiu will drop when he opens tbe stolen w»llet." About an hour afier, wben tbe train had departed, tbe officer was sur. prised to see tbe joker still banging •round, and this time alone. "Then jou.dldn't go to Chicago?" "Sa>," answered the man a» he eame closer, "that obsp wasn't after my money, after all. He aimply wanted my watch, and I'll be banged it he husu't got it! Where's the chief of police?"' Once too Often. An absent-minded Congressman once lost the vote of an entire fami'y by his carelessness. He ha1 a way of aaying, "I would be glad to have you do so," and one day a constituent, with his family, paid his respect*. The Congressman was busy, »nd after some taU the visitor said, "We will remain lu the city several days." "I should be glad to have you do so," replied the Mr. C, as he fumbled a pile of papers on uis desk. "We will come iu and see you every now and then," chirped the Visitor's wife. "I should be very glad to have you do so," said the Congressman. •'Auu bring around our other little boy you haven't seen," suggested the husband. "I should be glad to have you do so," still said the Congressman. Then they arose. "Well, Mr. Blank," sild the visitor, «xtending his hand, "we must tell you good-by and go back to the ho-tel." "I should be very glad to bave you do ao," said the Congressman again; and he wondered for a week what made his visitors leave s» abruptly and never come back to see him, as I hey had said they would. ♦■» ■ A San Franc'sco Tailor's Trick There is as<ory floating around the clubs at the expense of young Mr. James , but I whl not give his name, though his individuality m"»y easily be surmised from the nature of the Incident. This youth, whose father is airong the millionaires, lounged Into a la-lor shop a few weeks ago aud ordered a suit of clothes The suit was sent to the young man's ho-tel, out i f course the tailor got no mon^y f>r it. A few days ago, as Master Jamps was pss-dng by the tailor's shop, the hland proprietor bailed bra with a smile. "Why, Master James," he said, "that ooat is horribly wrinkled. Come Id and we will press it for voa." U-suspectlfig-ly he entered and eurrerrter-d the coa*. Then something was wrong with the vest, and that, too, was taken down stairs for treatment. The tailor next declared that the trousers might be improved upon. They wer • iriven up, and the youth accommodated with a seat in the dre*»iiig-room. "Now," sjld the wily tailor, "you will have to seud a messenger boy to your room for your oiher clothes, for I am afraid we cannot let you havt- this MOII sgaln uii'ijHs ynu liquidate the Mil iu full." THE COCAINE HABIT. THB WORST SLAVERY KNOWW-NEW BkVELATIONS OF POWER. Cincinnati Times-Star. When cocaine was discovered the medical world exclaimed "thank heaven." But useful as it is, it is also danger-ous especially when its use Is per-vert* d from the deadeulne of pain for Hurgical operations, to tbe stimulation and destruction of the human body. Its first effects are soothing and capti-vating, but the thralldom Is the most horrible slavery known to humanity. J. L. Stephens, M. D., of Lebanon, O , was interviewed by our reporter yesterday at the Grand Hotel, and il ring the conversation tbe doctor said : "Tbe cocaine habit Is a thou - and times worse than Ihe morphine or opium hahlts, snd you would be as-tonished." he said, "If you bnew how frightfully tbe habit is increasing." "What are Its effects?"' "It Is the worst constitution wreck-er ever knowu. It ruins the liver and kidneys in half a year, and when this work is done, the strongest constitu-tion soon succumbs.'' "Do you know of Dr. Underbill's case here In Cincinnati ?" "That leading physician who be-came a victim of tbe cocaine habit ? Yes. His case was a very sad one, but tbe habit can be oured. I bave rescued many a man from a worse condition." "What worse than Dr Underbill's?" "Indeed sir, far so. Justin M. Hall, A. M., M. D., piesident of tbe State Board of Health of Iowa, and a famed practitioner, and Alexander Nell, M. D., professor ot surgery In the Colum-bus Medical Colieg , and president of tbe Academy of Medicine, a man widely known, Rev. W. P. Clanoey, of Indianopolis, Ind., from personal experience in opium eating, etc., cau tell you of the kind of success our form of treatment wins, and so can H. C. Wilson, formerly of Cincinnati, who is now associated with me." "Would you mind letting our read-ers into the socret of your methods?"' "Well, youug man, you surely have a good bit of assurance to asa a man to give his business sway to the pub-lic; but I won't wholly disappoint you. I have treated over 20 000 pa-tients. In common with many emi- Icent physicians, I, for years made a close study of tbe effects of the habits on tbe system and the organs which they most severely attack. Dr. Hall, Dr. Nell and Mr. Wilson, whom I bave mentioned, and hundreds of oth-ers, equally as expert, made many sim-ilar experiments on their own be-half. We each found that tuese drugs worked most destructively in the kid-neys und liver; In fact, finally de-stroyed tbem. It was then apparent that no cure could be affected until those organs could be restored to health. We recently exhausted the entire range of medical science, exper-imenting with all known remedies for tue e organs, and as tbe result of ibese close investigations we all sub- Muntiaily agreed, though following different lines of Inquiry, that the moat reliable, scientific i reparation was Warners safe cure. This was tbe second point In the discovery, The third was our own private form of treatment, which, of course, we do not divulge to tbe public Every oa e that we have treated first with War-uer's safe cure and then with our own private treatment, and followed up again with Warner's safe cure foi a few weeks, baa been successful. These hamw can't be oured without using it, because tbe habit Is nourished and sue. talned in tbe liver aud kidneys. Tbe habit can be keot up lo moderation however,If free use be also made,at the same time, of that great remedy. "Yes it Is a world famed aud Justly celebrated specific! Like many other physicians, I used to deride tbe claims made for it, but I know now for a fact that It is tbe world's greatest blessing, having sovereign power over hitherto incurable diseases of tbe kidneys and liver, and when 1 bave said that, young man. I bave said nearly every-thing, for most dlseaes originate in, or are aggravated by, a depraved con-dition of the kidneys." "People do not realize this, because, singular as It may scmn, the kidneys may be lo a very advanced e»age of de-composition, and yet owing to the fsct that there are but few nerves of sensation In tln.ni tbe subject will not experience much palu therein. On this account thousands of people die every year of kidney disease unknow-ingly. They nave so called disorders of tbe head, of tbe heart aud luugs and stomach, and treat them in vain, for the real cause of their misery is de-ranged kidney* aud If tbey were re-stored to health the other disorders would soon dl-appear." Dr. Stephen's experience, that can be confirmed by many thousands whoi be has tretted.adds only more empha-sis to the experience of manv hun-dreds of thousands all over the world, that tue remedy he refers to Is with, out any doubt tbe most beuetlcent dls-oovery ever given lo humanity. FuDutionsl disorganization of the liver is a potent and common cause of melau-nil. uly. Dr. Bull's Baltimura Pills invar-iably give tone to the liver. Day's Horse Powder Is Indispensable for tbe proper cam of sheep and lambs lu win-ter. Toe best stock-raisers always keep It on hand. 29 cents. "Only a little eolheky I" Oollc makes many new graves. AUTUMNAL. D"BAM8.
BATABD TATLOH.
W lieu the maple turns to crimson.
And tbe ■austral to gold ;
When the srnUans In tbe meadow,
And tie aster on the wold;
When the moon 1B lapped In vapor.
And the night Is frosty cold.
When the obestnut burr- are opened,
And the acorns drop like hail.
And 1 ■ i- drowny air In startled
With th- t!.moping of Ihe flail—
With the drumming of the pirtrldge,
And the whistle ol the quail.
Through tho rustling woods I wanker,
Through the Jewels of the year.
From the yellow uplands culling,
Seeking her » ho la still dear ;
She Is ik- in me In the autumn,
She, the beautiful, Is near.
Through the smoke ot burning summer,
W hen tho weary wind . are still,
I o^n see her m tbe valley,
1 can hear her on the bill
In the splen lor of the woodlands.
In the whlaper of tbe rill.
for tbe shores of earth and heaven
Meet and mingle In the blue ;
She can wander down the glory
To the places that she knew.
Where the happy lover wandered
In tbe days wben life was true.
So 1 think when life is sweetest,
And i he world Is m holly fair.
She may sometimes steal upon me
Through the dimness of the air.
With the cross upon her bosom.
And the amaranth in her hair.
Onoe to meet her, ab ! to meet her,
And to hold her gently fast
Till I blessed her, till she hlersed me—
That were happiness at last;
That were bliss beyond our meetings,
In tbe autums of tbe past I
— Weil C/utler Local Ntws.
He Laughed Out.
He wan from tbe East, and if he was
not an ex-detective, he had at least a
right lo be called a philosopher. He
was buzzing around tbe depot with a
suspicious looking young man, and
making a great show of a fat wallet,
and finally tbe ppeoial officer stepped
up to him and said, "My friend, who
is this youug man?"
"I think he Is a pickpocket," was
tbe prompt reply.
"Where are you sroltig?"
"To Chicago, and he has just pur-chased
his ticket for the same point."
"If you think he Is a eusp'ciouB
character why do you trald in his
company?"
"Himply to beat him."
•How?"
"He goes to Chicago because I'm
going. He means to pick my wallet
between here an j there. He had to
scrape bis pockets to buy the ticket.
I have two wu lets just alike. About
halfway to Cbicag-> i;shall let him get
bold of tbe one stuffed with paper
He will leave the train at the first sta-tion
aftSi. He will have no money.
Bud no friends, and be mad enough to
burst when he sees my trick. I'm
just cracking my sides over the way
bis euiu will drop when he opens tbe
stolen w»llet."
About an hour afier, wben tbe
train had departed, tbe officer was sur.
prised to see tbe joker still banging
•round, and this time alone. "Then
jou.dldn't go to Chicago?"
"Sa>," answered the man a» he
eame closer, "that obsp wasn't after
my money, after all. He aimply
wanted my watch, and I'll be banged
it he husu't got it! Where's the
chief of police?"'
Once too Often.
An absent-minded Congressman
once lost the vote of an entire fami'y
by his carelessness. He ha1 a way of
aaying, "I would be glad to have you
do so," and one day a constituent,
with his family, paid his respect*.
The Congressman was busy, »nd
after some taU the visitor said, "We
will remain lu the city several days."
"I should be glad to have you do
so," replied the Mr. C, as he fumbled
a pile of papers on uis desk.
"We will come iu and see you
every now and then," chirped the
Visitor's wife.
"I should be very glad to have you
do so," said the Congressman.
•'Auu bring around our other little
boy you haven't seen," suggested the
husband.
"I should be glad to have you do
so," still said the Congressman.
Then they arose.
"Well, Mr. Blank," sild the visitor,
«xtending his hand, "we must tell
you good-by and go back to the ho-tel."
"I should be very glad to bave you
do ao," said the Congressman again;
and he wondered for a week what
made his visitors leave s» abruptly
and never come back to see him, as
I hey had said they would.
