The feet ot 'Uirlstmas nearlng. —Susan Hartley in 81. .Mchola-/or Ottobtr. Wearing the Orange Blossoms. " I wonder who will have It, the bouse, ihe forluue aud the mllliona'.re hlmsell." Regiua Courtland cast an envious glance at the "Etherton house" acrosi> the pretly little river, on whose batik she stood, an envious glance that em-braced the sloping lawn ; the green terraces with their marble vases filled v Ith geraniums ; the flower gardens, one blaze of color p«rfume and glory, under the mid-summer sun ; the cool g-een of the miniature park, with its wititli'iK walks and ancient trees; then the hnuae Itselt -that grand and state-ly mausiou ol white marble and free-stone, ho full of art treasures collected in many lands, so beautiful and desir-able a home over wnlcb to rule. " I will win him if he can be won !" she thought.setting her red lips firmly together. "Agnes Is ready to help me in every way and this raid-summer ball of hers may do wonders for me. Nothing can be more becoming than the toilet she has devised, if Claudius Etherton is not reminded of It by the Parisiau ball rooms be has just left, I shall be surprised." The proud beauty turned away and began to pace the lawn at Itiverview. Ii was Luta small place compared with Etherlou Hous-, yet she thougl t her portionless sister very fortunate, when five yesrs previously her handsome face had won for her the heart and hand rfFrank Merriam, the wealthy stock broker of Pine street. "I beg s'our pardon, madam," said n deep voice close beside her, ' have I the honor of addressing Mrs. Mer-rlam ?" Buch a tall, dark, fiercely-bearded stranger, shabbily dressed, yet with the bearlug of a gentleman. "I am Mies Courtland, sir," she sal j with dignity. He bowed profoundly, struck Into a side-path shaded with evergreens and vanished before she could remember that he was probably a tramp, and that he had no business on the grounds. And he has gone by the side path to Mr. Merrlam's study ; I bad better go and tell Agnes. Just then a loud out-cry broke from that direction. She distinguished Mt. Merrlam's voice In accents of surprise and exultation and presently the voice of her sister put-ting on its richest tone. She turn-ed toward the Imu-e full of ourlosity. Mrs. Merriam met her in the hall, her Spanish face slightly faded, and just touched here and there with a tiny furrow that told of lato hours and fashionable dissipation was disfigured now by a most decided frown. "Such an unmitigated nuisance,' she exclaimed in no geutle tone. "That reckless John Etherton, who gambled aud ttran . away that fine es-tate on the other side of the river, has turned up all of a sudden from Aus-tralia and my husband in ecstasies of delight has actually asked him here an a permanent guest. It is bad enough to have AMce Merriam here for the holidays, but a visitor li'.ie this , shab-bily dres ed, dlsrespcctable and pen-niless. I know from what be just now said to Fraim. Aud every room is needed for tuls midsummer ball. Isu't It too provoking for anything, but Fraud insists that he shall be re-ceived with perfect reaped- and •' "Hush," said Regie quickly. The host aud his guest were coming from the library a u-t were near the ladies as she spoke. How much or how lit-tle he heard there was a deep flush on his face, but he walked proudly by. merely lifting bis hat to the ladles. It was true Ethertou House aud the e-tale had been his own once, though through a wild youth aud stormy mauhuod lie bad thrown It away piece-meal aud at twenty-five be bad left hit i.atlve laud—a beggar. Now-after ten years wandering he was back hiiII penniless and just in 'line, as the people said, to see his cousiu Claadius take possession of the home that for live generations had been in the fam-ily name. Well might they wonder that he could bear to return, and he was not surprised to ttud that they jg'ior tl his presence In the drawing-room be'ore dinner. After oue glance that snowed them that he had merely removed the dust of traveling from bis a'-abby clothes, that he had worn on 1,1a urrival, he dare not ofter his arm to Mrs. Merriam or the soornlul Mi>* C lurt'aud wbeu dinner was an-nounced, llui bis friend niolioued him toward a titni-i, delicate lookiug girl, with violet eyes and golden hair, who entered the room just then. She laid one SIHHII hand upon his arm; ahe was breathing fast as if she had been hurried, and during dinner from a quesilon addre-sed to her by Merri-am he discovered that she was a mu-sic teacher, and had been detained beyond her u-mal hour at the house of a recently acqulied pupil. "I beg you will not be late again," ■aid Mrs. Merriam croasly. "You have nearly missed dinner to-day " The girl made uoanswer ; but John Etherton saiv a tear fall presently down her cheek. Then came the move from the table, and as be opeu-ed the door for the scornful hostess and her sister, he glanced at the little music teacher aud the blue eyes that met the glance were mill dimmed with grief. "Who Is that charming creature, Frank ?" he asked as they sat with his friend over their wine. "You remember Angus Merriam, my father's cousin and partner," said the broker, "he Bp»culated In a silver mine and made mil ions, and this girl—hison'y cbnd— was brought up as an heiress until she was fifteen, tiieu tbem'ne failed aud bis millions vanished In a days warning. He was a ruined m»u sure. I think the shock turned his brains for be took polsen aud and left his child all alone in the world. I ottered her a borne here, but the woman—my boy the woman. Poor Alice was uubaopy aud by her wish she became a music teacher in the city. She comes to us for the holidays and just gives a f«w lessons in the neighborhood while she stays. Mrs. Merriam and her sister dislike ber, I am sorry to say. She is a dear, brave little tbiug, and pretty, as you can see for yourself. If you bad only come home with a fortune what a wife she would have made you ap-parently. John Etherton was of the same mind, and poor as be was be ventured to try his fortune with the little music teacher, after two weeks of constant and friendly intercourse which went on unnoticed by Mrs. Merrian or her sister, they being engrossed, heart and soul, in the preparatiou for the grand midsummer ball, now close at hand. Alice listened very kindly to the ap-peal the adventurer made to her. He owned that his life had been a reck-less one, but if she would only share it in the future, ha promised that it should grow nobler and purer day by day: From the first moment of their meet-ing Alice bad felt a strange Interest in the shabby stranger with his grave face and dark bright eyes, little by little she bad learned to love him and one week before the ball she bad prom-ised that as soon as he could earn a home for her she would oome to it, bis willing, happy wife. On the next evening, what seemed like a miracle to the music teacher, a box from the "emporium" of a famous city milliner and dress maker was brought to Blverview by the express-iran. It was directed to Miss Alice- Merriam and on bting opened was found to contain the lovllest dress im-maginable, white silk laoe over white silk, the sleeves and skirt looped with forget-me-Lots and a wrenth for be hair, white gloves, satin slippers, bou-qui t holder of torquolse and pearl com-pleted the girlish toilet. Alice huug over the box in rapture, who couid have sent It? she orled Hgaln and again. Miss C'uriland looked at ber and at the drew with an evil frown on her face. She must not appear at your ball In that toilet she said to ber sister an hour later, IfClaudius Etberten should see her make yourself easy my dear, I will not let ber come between you and your chance of winning him. Consequently on the evening of the ball, John Etberton(who, by the way, had evidently purchased a new even-ing suit for the occasion, In wbloh, be locked very dignified aud handsome. John Ethertou found his betrothed in the garden-parlor, where she had promised to meet him for the dance sitting on the sofa by the French win-dow , crying as If her heart would break, "how Is this?" he asked, sitting down beside her, "when you look like a fairy queen, why are you spoiling those forget-me-not eyes by crying?" sbecluugto him for consolation, as she bad already learned to do. "Mrs. Merriam and ber sister are dressed so beautifully to receive their guests, but she says I must not come In as I can-not dance with you, and she looked at this dress of mine and said that it was redlculous for anyone like me, she said I was trying to make myself look like a bride, all but the orange flow-ers, and that I should not euter her ball room to-night. A mischievous smile gleamed in bis black eyes, "stay here until I come back." He hurried to the study and found Frank Merriam fortlfvlng him-self against the impending invasion by a glass of wine and a cigar, he said a few w«rds to him, the broker sprang to bis feet with a cry of delight, "John, dear old fellow—oh, bow glad I am, not that I did not like you as well before I knew, but " "don't stop to talk, but come with me and persuade Alice to do what I wish, and then go with me to your own clerg- - man and give the bride away," said his friend urgently, wi'b all my heart Jobu, and to think I never remember-ed that middle name of yours. I've never used It since I was a boy ; and niv cousin kept the secret for now do ail you can with Atir -." Half on hour afterwards the cur-rlage drove from the door to where the rectory stood where the pastor of Burieigh church resided, within an hour il.e carriage returned, Mr. Mer-rlau> sprang out first, John E'berto;, followed, handing out the prelty bride with the greatest of oare. Mr Merriam Ved the way to the nail room, the servant at tbe door stared at the whispered announcement bis master made, but too well trained to neglect duty he called souoiousiy "Mr. John Claudius Etherton and wife! pale to the lipa Regie Courtland turned to the door, Mrs. Men lam came fo-ward to meet tbe guest of the evening, try-ing vainly to cover ber sister's dis-comfiture and ber own. Bowing low before net' was thesta'ely "adveu-er wh-m she had scorned aud slight-ed ami scorned beneath her own roof aud leaning on bis arm was tbe des-pised music teacher, now mistress of E'berton hoi se. The forget-me-nots had been removed, tbe pretty violet was all snow whltenes-, and AMce Etherton wore tbe orange flowers of a bride at last. POWDER Absolutely Pure. This powder never varies. I have been practicing medicine for twenty years, and have never been able to put up a vegetable compound that would, like Simmons Liver Regu-lator, promptly and effectively move the Liver to Action, and at the same time aid (instead of weak-ening) the digestive and assimilative powers of the system.
