Ylu-v win COB-pletely emblematic of Ihcii possaaaor.wboa* religion it was to make the mOstOl .very thing, and, among the rest, ofthedil of bis particular friends, among whom 1 had the happiness of ataudiug very forward, My business required but little explanation, for I was oppressed by neither rent rolls nor title-deeds ; and we sat down to eouldtr the readiest means of turning an exealkwt income for one year, into something dl OMt for a few more. My adviser, whose small experienced eye had twinkled IhrOBgh all the speculation of the age, and, at the same time, had taken a very exact admeasure-ment of my capabilities of turning them to advantage.seemed to be of the opinion that I was fit for nothing on earth. For oue undertaking I wanted application , lor another I wanted capital. "Now," said he, "aathefirstortheseiieficicmufji" edinble, we must do what WO out M supply the latter. Necessity obliged me toacqaMtCe ia too proposal, and I assured the old oormOfaDt that there was every likelihood ol my re-quiting his liberality by the most unremit-ting perseverance in all the evil babitl which had procured me hia counteri.m •-. We shook hands in mutual ill opinion, and be obligingly volunteered to accompany me to an Insurance Office, where they were supposed to estimate the duration ul a man's life to a quarter of an hour aud odd secouda. We arrived a little before the l.nsi hour, and were shown into a large room, where we found several more speculators waiting ruefully for the oracle to pronnuuee sentence. Iotheceutre was a large table, round which, at equal distances wen placed certain little lumps of mouey, which my friend told me were to reward the labors of the Inquisition, among whom the surplus arising from absentees would likewise b« divided. From the keenness with which en in individual darted upon his share, and ogled thstof his abseut neighbor,! surmised that some of my fellow sufferers would lad the day against them. They would be ex amined by eyes capable of penetrating every crevice of their constitutions, by I noses which would smell a rat a mile oil, ! and hunt a guinea breast-high. How, la- I deed, ronld plague or pestilence, gout or I gluttony, expect to lurk in its hole mil,. turbed, when surrounded by a pack ol terriers which seemed hungry enough to devour one another ? Whenever the dooi nianinied, aud tbey looked for an addition . to their cry, they seemed lor all the woild my friend Was handing me forward, my .- \v..s arrested by the entrance of a I.nly, with an elderly maid-servant Bhe waa draanal In slight moumiug, was the, most spaikling beauty I had ever seen, and appeared to produce an instantaneous i ran upon the stony-hearted directors til-m-i-'.vc<. The chairman politely re- I her to take a seat at the table, aud Immediately entered into her business, which sunn I little more than to show bertelf, and to be eutitled to twenty thous-and pounds, for which her tote hu*bttnil had Insured his life. "Zjuuds," thought', "twenty thousand pounds aud n widow !" "Ah, Madam," observed the chairman, '"yonr husband made too good a bargain with in. I told him he was an elderly, sickly suit of a man, and not likely to last; but I nevrr thought be would have died so soon after his marriage." An elderly, sickly sort of a man I She would marry again, of couise! 1 was on lire to be examined before her, and let her heal a favorable report of me. As luck would have it, she had some further trans-actions, which required certain papera to be■ nl (or,and,in the pause, I stepped boldly forward, " t, -ntlemen," said my lawyer, With a smile, which whlteued th-tip of his nose, aud very nearly se.it it through the external tegument^, "allow me to introduce Mr. , a particular friend of mine, who is di lirooi of insuring his life. You perceive be is not one of your dying sort." Ian turned their eyes toward me with evident satisfaction, and I bad the vanity to believe that the widow did "Von have a good broad che»t," said MM " I dare say your lungs are never ,1 '' "Good shoalder* too," said another. "Not likely to be knocked down in a row." ,. i . legs, aud not debilitated by di-sipation," said a third. "I think this LCitleman will suit us." I opald netcetvt that, during these compliments ami a few others, the widow was very much inclined to titter, which I consul, red as much as u llirtntion com <l ; and when 1 was ordered into UOthei room to le further examined by the surgeon in attendance, I longed to tell her to stop till 1 came back. The pro-fessional gentleman did his utmost to find n flaw in me, but was obliged to write a Cortifioato, with which I re-entered, and had the satisfaction of hearing the chair-man read that' I was warranted souud. The board congratulated me somewhat joco-ely, and the widow laughed outright. Our attain were settled exactly at the •arnc moment, aud I followed her cloeely down si,i n "Wluil mad trick are you at now?" In-quired the cormorant. "I am g'ling to band the lndy to her car-riage." I responded ; and I kept my word. owed to me with much courtesy, langbed again, and desired her seivant to drive home, "Where is that, John I" said 1. .Number , sir, in atre-t," (aid turtle-doves. The pictures were a series or the loves of Jupiter, the vases presented nothing but heart's ease and love-lies-bleed-ing ; the very canary birds were inspired, and had a nest with two young ones ; nud the cat herself looked kindly over the bud ding baanttm of a tortoise shell killeu. What a place fir a ttoaltlvt heait like mini '■ 1 could not bear to look upon the mirrois which r. Heeled ni.v broad shouldeis on every side, like so many giants; and would hnve given the world to apptar a little pall and interesting, although it might have injured my life a dozen years' pun bane. Nevertheless, I was not daunted, and I looked round, for something to talk about, on the beautiful occupations, which I found were all in a tone with what I had before remarked. 1'pon the open piano lay "Auld JColiin Qray," which had, no donbt, been aung in allusion to her late husband. On the table was a hall finished drawing of Apollo which was iquully, without doubt. meant to apply to her future one ; and round uliout were strewn the sedative tones of Moore, Campbell and lliown. "This witch," thought I, "is the very creature I have been sighing after I 1 would have married her outol a hedge-way,und woiked upon the roads to maintain her ; but with twenty thouaand pouuda—ay, and much more, unleas I urn mistaken, she would create a fever in the frosty Caucasus. I was in the most melting mood alive, when the door opened, and in walked the fascinating object of my speculations. She was dressed in simple gray, wholly without ornament, and her dark-brown hair waa braided demurely over a forehead which looked as lofty as her face was lovely. The reception she gave me waa polite and gracelul, but somewhat distant ; and I perceived that she hnd either forgotten, or was determined not to recogniza me. I was not quite prepared for this, and, grace that was quite miraculous. She lidi- < ul d the rapidity oi OC-r acquaintance, td my modi sty, till it waa well ni»h baraed to ■ tlntir. aud every now aud then sharpened her wit, by a delicate recurrence to \|,nllouud the sboul lens of lleicn' -"• The third and the fourth and the fifth il I,. »i:h twice a- many more, were equal-lj productive of excuses for calling, eBd ii- us for remuiuinir. till el last I lool upon me to call and remain without troob ling myself alsiiit the one or the other. I was receiveil with progressive cordiality; and, at last, with a mixture of timidity which aasmed me of Ibe anticipation of a calustrophe which was, at once to decide the question with the Insurance OIHce, and determine the course ol my travels. One day I Ami il lh« Perl llUlBg rather pensive-ly at work, aud, M u.-iul. 1 took my seat opposite to her. "I have bren thinking," said she, "that I have been mightily impased upon. "lly \v lion,'.-" I inquired. "By one of whom yen have the highest opinion—by yourself." 'In what do you mistrust me?" "Come, now, will it please you to be can-did auij,e" me honestly that all that ex-ceedingly intelligible story ubont yonr fa-ther nud the liver complaint, and heavens knows what, was a mere fabrication?" "Will it please you to let me thread that needle, for I see th it you are taking aim at the wrong end of il?" "Nonsense ! Will you answer ma?" "I think I could put the finishing tonch to that sprig. Do you not see?" 1 contin-ued, jumpiog up and leaning over. "It should be done so- and then so. What stitch do yon call thai?"' The beauty was not altogether in » mood for joking. I took her hand—it trembled —aud so did mine. ' Will you parduu mi?" 1 whispered. "I am a sinner, acounteif«it, a poor, Bwind-spite of my constitutional confidence, felt j ling, disreputable vagabond but I love i though they were going to bark; and If a Jo)n . uud awuJ t^.y went. straggler really entered and seized upon bis moiety, the intelligent look of vexation was precisely like that of a dog who had lost a bone. When ten or a dozen of these gentry had assembled, the labors of the day commenced. Most of our adventurers for raialai plies upon their natural lives were afflicted with a natural conceit that they ware by no means circumscribed in foundation for such a prospect. In vain did the board endeavor to persuade Ihem that they wt re half-dead already. They fought haul I * a few more years, swoie that their fatberi had been almost immortal, and that their whole families bad been as tenacious of life as eels themselves. Alas ! they were first ordered into an adjoining room, which I soou learned was the condemned cell, aud then delicately informed that the establish-ment could have nothing to say to them. Rome, indeed, had the good luck te be re-prieved a little longer, hut even tl>, not effect a very flattering or advantageous bargain. One old gentleman bad a large premium to pay for a totter in his kun.- another for an extraordiuaiy elrenmrereoee in the girth; and a dowager of high i ability, who was ufllicted wiih certain undue proportiona of width, was lined most exorbitantly. The only C0I who met with anything like aatbuactioo, was a gigantic man of Irelaud, with whom Death, I thought, was likely to have a puzzling contest. "How old are you, sir?" Inqaired au examiner. " Forty." " Yon seem a strong man." " I am the strongest man in Ireland." "Hut subject to the gout?' "No; the rheumatism. Nuth i. upon my soul." "What age was your hthei when be died?" "Three bottles, with coat ' "Ay, that is bad. You have a n and lisik apoplectic, go off suddenly." We walked steadily along, the bird of pn-y reckoning up the advantages of his bargain with me, and I in a mood of equally interesting reflection. "What are yon pondering about, young gentleman .'" he at last commenced. "I am pondering whether or no yon have not overreached yourself in this transaction. ' "How "Why, I begin to think I shall be obliged to give up my harem-scarem way of life ; diink moderately, leave off fox-hunting, and sell my spirited horses, which you know, will make a material difference in the probable date of my demise." My I knew, was desperate.- I should lave hang-d myself a month before, had it nol i eon for the E leom Rices, at which I and my adilitional an diagoal of the world, would, I thought, be rather a nUasure than a pain— provided I was disappointed in the lovely MoiKstyisaaad bugbear ii|H>n foitune. In my own case ;l W8J '■'■ ' I no .ins ■ family disease, nor bad I livnl in any way by which I was likilv to contract it. Accordingly, on the following day. I .aught myselt very coolly knocking at the widow's door; and so uitirely had 1 P'ed in considering the various blessings which would accrue to hot h«'i us from our nnion, that I was half way up stairs liefore I began to think of mi i M-ii e for my intrusion. The draw-ing loom v.iH-vaciint, and I was left for a , nl to wonder whether I was not You will, HI illy in "mo temple of Ibe Loves and There was not a thing to bo seen not a little embarrassed. I had. perhaps, mistaken tho breaking forth of a young and buoyant spirit, under ridieuloas circum-stances for the encouragement of volatile coquetry; and, for a moment, I was in doubt whether I should not apologize, and pretend that she wus not the lady for whom my visit was inteuded. Hut then she was so bcautilul ! Angels und niini-ter-! Nothing on earth could have scut mr dowu stairs unless I had been kicked down | "Madam," I began—but my-blood was in a turmoil, aud I have never been ahlo to recollect precisely what I said. Simelhiug it was, however, about my late lather and her lamented husband, absence und the Kiat Indies, liver complaints and life assurance : with compliments, condolence, pardon, perturbation, nnd peter- pin -perfect impertinence. The lady lo-iked surprised, broke my speech with two or three well-bred ejaculations, aud astouiahed me very mocb by protesting that she had never heard her hnsbaud mention either my father or bis promising little heir-nppareul, William Henry Thomas, in the whole course of their union. "Ah, Madam," said 1, "the omission is extremely ualural ! I am sure I am not at all oU'endid with your late husband upou that score. He was an elderly, sickly sort of a man. My father always told him he could not last, but he never thought he would bare died ao soon after his marriage. He had not time, Madam, to make his friends happy, by introducing Ihem to yoa." I believe upon the whole, I must have behaved remarkably well, for the widow could not quite mnkc up her mind to credit me or not, which, when we consider the very slender materials I had to work upon, is saving a great deal. At last I contrived to make the conversation glide away to Auld Hobinllrey.aud thedrawiog of Abollo which 1 pronounced a chrf-tl'a'urrr. ; Permit me, however, to suggest that the symmetry of the figure would not be i destroyed by a little more of Hercules iu the shoulders, which would make bis life | worth a much longer purchase. A little I more amplitude in the chest too.and atrille stronger in the legs, as they sny at the In- | siiranceiillice. The widow looked comieally at the recollection which I brought to her mind ; her rosy lips began to disclose their treasures in a half smile; and this, iu turn, expanded into a laugh like the laugh of I'.uphrosyne. This was the very thing for me. I was always rather dashed by beauty on the stilts ; but put us upon fair ground, and I never supposed that I could be other-wise than charming. I ran over all the amusing topics of the day, expended a thousand admirable jokes, repeated touch-, ing passages from a new poem which she had not read, laughed, sentimentalised, cuddled the kitten, and forgot to go away till I had sojourned full two hours. I i phrosyne quito lostsight of my questionable introduction, and chimed In with a wit as brilliant as her beauty ; nor did she put ou » single grave look, when I volunteered to call the next diy and read the remainder of the p •em. It is impossible to conceive how carefully I walked home. My head ami heart were full ol the widow uud th- wager, ami my life was more precious than the l'igot Dia-mond. I kept my eye sedulously upon the pavement, to be so c I bat the coal-holes , you as my soul.1' The work dn>| p;d upon her knee. » • • « • In about a fortuight from this lime, I ad-dreesed I he following note to my friend: Dear Air,—It will give yon greut pleas-ure to hear th t my prospects are mending, aud that you have lost your wager.
