The ti*o men were connected with the fire at the slate mill by some clever detective work on the part of Consfabli> Ceorg<* Werkheiser. and a ;i resiil; nf 'i.,- information which II , gaili.-r, ll, Crossman admitted that he and Hahn had started the fire. The day of the fire, a crow-bar was found on the jiremises. and work¬ men at the destroyed mill said that this was not sharpened as were the crow-bars in use there, and then Werklieiser made a round of the various quarries. Finally, it was identified as being the property of the Uhoeni.'c Slate Co. It was then recalled that Grossman had visited fhe Phoeni.x mill the day before the fire, and had borrowed a crow-bar. This caused suspicion to be directed toward hlin. and as it was known that he and Hahn were travellins about a great deal, it was expected that Hahn had heen implicated also. (Grossman, admitting that they had been responsible for the flre, said thnt he and Hahn had gone to the Plainfield mill, with the inten¬ tion of robbing the safe. However, rhey found that it was too much for them, and decided that they would give it up. and that they would siiend the remainder of the night at the mill. -Accordingly, they went to the cor¬ ner of the mill .vherc the fire was later learned to have started, rind there they built a fire to keep warnj. However, the fire got beyond their control, and was communicated to the building with was desfroyed. r- [V hp T -¦¦• .*"' "1 -.o-d l-ii \t:':y or- nv IT IIK.11 St IKlOi, .Ndli; the result that it i-i'ii; be- ie ni.-I. at .1 mined to ¦¦'iiu-fres of ' " f arson will I'l^Tor. They fear a reversion to tha ¦ state of utter unpreparedness that I prevailed before the world war un. less the senate plan of consolidat¬ ing the National Iuard into the fed. eral military establishment can b« j adopted. | A shrinkage of almost $1,000,000 000 In the bank deposits of the country,; with a commensurate shrinkage in the total resources of the national! banks, is noted by Comptroller ofi the Currency Williams. Judged by the past attitude of tha President, he would be disposed to accept the post of Armenian arbitra¬ tor, although this phase of the Turk¬ ish settlement, as far as known, has never been definitely presented to him. The President has a deep in. ti^rest in tbe Armenian problem and as .Trbitrator he would be able to carry out the principles knowns at the "fourteen points."
