HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 5 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, DECEMBER 12, 1957 No. 50 School Christmas Music Festival To Saluie Season Striking the keynote of Christmas in musical fashion will be the annual Christmas Music Festival of the Derry Township Schools. The .popular concert of sacred and traditional music will be held at seven-thirty p. m. on Monday, December 16, in the Hershey Community Theatre. Taking part in the event will be some 250 stu-dents in the various vocal and instrumental groups of the school music department. Participants will include members of the Hershey High School Orchestra, • Hetshey High School Chorus, Hershey Junior College Chorus, Her-shey High School Girls' Chorus, and a pantomime group. They will be supported by a production. staff of stu-dents and faculty. members. Conducting the groups will be _Miss Jane I. Erne', high school orchestra; Wilbert H. Hartman, high school chorus; :and Paul G. Fisher, junior 'College chorus. Directing the pantomimists will be Miss Elaine Trotter. Opening the nni,i( festi‘,11 wlll"ban organ prelude by Diane Bohner, followed by selections by the high school. orchestra. The impressive candlelight processional of the high school and junior college. choruses will set the stage for a com-bined rendition of "Gloria in Excelsis." • Dr. Varnum H. Fenster-macher, dean of HersheST Jun-ior College, will then extend the greetings to the audience in behalf of the students. The high school girls' chorus will appear• to sing "Birthday of a King," "No Candle Was There •and No Fire," "Go Tell It on the Mountain," and "Winter Won-derland," •followed , a brass quintet. playing Yuletide carols. , The quintet will include Lee Moyer and Terry Garman, trumpets; David Fortna, trombone; James Kling, tuba; a n d Thomas,- Longenecker, French horn. Jr. College Chorus Tenor Harold Gallagher will be heard as soloist as the junior • college chorus sings, "I Wonder As I Wander," an Appalachian carol. The col-lege group will also present the selections, "Glorious Is Thy Name," "Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head," and `Turn, ' Fum, Furn," a Spanish. carol. The audience will be invit-ed to sing the favorites, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing." Foreman • JOHN HERTZLER, Hershey High School gridder, re-ceives the congratulations of Head Coach Frank Kamus after Hertzler was named Outstanding Player of the Year by a vote of his teammates: Hertzler was awarded the Outstanding Player trophy which is given annually by the Marching Club of the 'Hershey Volunteer Fire Company. Community's Churches Plan Christmas Rites The spiritual aspect of Christmas will be widely.ob-served here, with special services in the various churches emphasizing the true meaning of the joyous religious holiday. Following tradition, much of the Christmas observance in the community's churches will be of a musical - nature, with choirs and children's groups singing the story of the Babe of Bethlehem. • Pageantry of. the season will 'be prese,nted in the churches, and special sermons are being prepared by the pastors for the Christmas services. , Most of the Christmas services in Hershey churches are listed in the following paragraphs. Others will be included in next week's is-sue. At All Saints 'Episcopal Church, a Midnight Festal Choral Eucharist and Sermon will be held as the Christmas Eve service, with a Festal Choral Eucharist also at eleven a.m. on Christmas Day. The church will hold its children's Christmas pageant on Sunday, De-cember 29, at 7110 p.m., and special Holy Day services are being ar-ranged. " The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity will observe White Gift Sunday on December 22 during the Church School period. The combined choirs of 99 voices— Cherub, Carol, Youth and Senior Choirs — will present, the annual Christmas program on December 22 at 7:30 p.m., with Mrs. Edward Walls as choir directress and Thomas H. 'Israel as organist. On Christmas Eve the. Sacrament of the Altai will be celebrated. The Church School Christmas program for the congregation will be held during the Matins on De-cember 29 at 9:15 a.m. Also on December 29, at six p.m., Family Night will be held in the Parish Hall, with entertainment and re-freshments provided by the young adults and the Men's and Women's Bible Classes and decorations by the Luther League. At ,the First Evangelical United Brethren Church, Christmas Sun-day will be noted on December 22 with the Christmas Message and Sacrament of Baptism at the 10:30 a.m.'service and a pageant by the combined Senior and Youth Choirs at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Prof. Robert W. Smith. Christmas Sunday will also be devoted to the gift offering for, the Quincy Home and Orphanage. The church's annual Service of Carols' and Lights will be held at eleven p.m.. on Christmas Eve, pre-ceded.- by an organ recital begin= ning at 10:45. The Spring Creek Church of the Brethren will begin the seasonal observance on Friday evening (De cember 13) with a Christmas Family Night in the social room of the church. On Sunday, Decem-ber 15, the morning service will ,bring the Pastor's Christmas Mes-sage and special music by the Ladies' Choir and Senior Choir. The evening service. on December 15 will .be devoted to a carol serv-ice by the Senior Choir, Melody Choir, Youth Choir and Junior Choir. •The Senior Choir has planned a program of Christmas anthems for the December 22 morning service, and at the evening service the Junior Department will present its Christmas program. The Young people of the church, along with choir members, will follow their custom of caroling on Christmas Bve. Hertzler, who • suffered a fractured ankle in the Me-chanicsburg garne', proved himself- to-be an oktstanding public speaker as indicated in his acceptance remarks and in the presentation Of a jack-et to COach Kamus from the squad. Co-captain with South Penn All-Star halfback Barry Dan-iels, Hertzler also announced the next season's co-captains would be center Ron Wenrich and halfback speedster Jim Bott. Sevor "Tor" Toretti, assist-ant coach at Penn State, heaped praise on the should- *re of Hershey's Les Waiters, Penn State end, during' the course of Toretti's principal address. Don't place the tree near hot spots such as radiators, fireplaces or television sets. Don't use paper ornaments, cotton batting or gauze that hasn't been treated for flame resistance. Keep -curtains and other flammable material at least six inches from electric bulbs. Check light cords for fray-ing, and have the switch for turning on tree lights some distance from the tree itself. Carl Foreman 182 West Governor Road, was elected president a the Derry Town-ship Board of School Directors at the board's annual reorgan-ization meeting on December 3. Foreman succeeded Clever E. Ernst. . At the same time, William H. Black was elected board vice - president, succeeding Foreman in that post. Both Foreman and Black were re-elected to six-year terms on the school board at the November general elec-tion. • Other members of the board are Secretary. .Ezra .E. Grubb, Treasurer Paul 0. Curry, Clev-er E. Ernst, E. Morse Heisey and Marlin E. Balsbaugh. At the conclusion of the re-organization meeting, the an-nual reorganization dinner was served in the elementary school cafeteria to forty guests. National Guard Unit To Move To Hershey Site For the first time in its history, Hershey will welcome a unit of the Pennsylvania National Guard as a part of its community picture. The 899t1'i Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, now lo-cated at Lancaster, will be in its new quarters in the old Reese candy factory building at Caracas Avenue and Ridge Road by December 15, a Guard spokesman said. However, an office- is al-ready being staffed there for information . and recruiting purposes. • The battalion is command-ed by Lt. Col. Daniel Rogers of Linglestown Route I. Cap-tain Charles- E.
