HERSHEY NEWS HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, SEPTEMBER 30, 1954 No. 39 New Sirens To Go Into Use After Oct. 5 Hershey's new fire sirens have passed their week-long tests and have been pro-nounced "okay" by the Volun-teer Fire , Company's siren committee. The two.alarm signals are to be put into use effective Tuesday Midnight, October 5, it was announced. At the same time, the new phone number will be Hershey 6003 - the same call used at present for ambulance emergencies. , The fire company's siren committee put the new devices through their paces last week in a series of tests designed to try the effectiveness of the sirens under various condi-tions. The latest signal devices on the market, the sirens pro-vide seven sound Outlets which make them non-directionalain nature. Each is rated at ten horse-power, and provides a low-tone signal designed to over-ride adverse wind conditions. Both "sound off' simultan-eiously. 'The two sirens are mounted on the buildings of the Her-shey Chocolate Corporation and the Hershey Estates Lum-ber Company. Testing the efficiency of the signals throughout last week, with the assistance of a trained sound engineer, were these members of the fire company's siren committee: Chairman Elmer ROdel, Fire Chief George Trump, John Lepperd, Felton Ebersole, Warren Habecker and Richard Willard. The new Federal sirens were provided by the Her-shey Chocolate Corporation and Hershey Estates and will be maintained by the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company. Halloween Parade Plans Announced By PTA Group The Derry Township-Parent- Teacher Association has an-nounced plans for Hershey's annual Halloween Parade, to be held on Saturday evening, October 30. Mrs: C. Ray Strickler, prepi-dent, has appointed Ivan Selt-zer and Hiram Groff as co-chairmen of the affair. Other chairmen are: Ray Hovis, treasurer; Mrs. W. H. Foley, refreshments; Ed Til-den, posters; Cyril J. Little, parade; Richard H. McCrone, publicity, and Allen Huber, ac-tivities. Preliminary plans call for the procession to move over the town's principal streets, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The marchers will proceed to Her-shey Stadium, where prizes . will be awarded. The clean-up campaign marks the observance of Fire Prevention Week. ' Fire company officials requested that citizens put their scrap materials at the curb by six p.m. for the pickup crews. In case of inclement weather, the collection will be made the following Monday evening, October 11. The firemen conduct the collection of iron, rags and paper on a twice-yearly basis. Another drive is planned for dred copies go out each week. Residents of Hershey, Hum-melstown, Palmyra, Campbell-town, Grantville and ,Swatara Station receive their copies via the patron mailing system. In addition, employees of Her-shey are reached via direct addressing, 'along with retired employees and the employees at br anch -establishments throughout the United States. Monday Marks '54 Community Chest Kickoff Derry Township's 1954 Community Chest campaign this week was. poised to get under way, with the kick-off set for Monday. The local campaign is head-ed by Joseph S. Gumpher, with John Baum serving as treasurer. The 35 team cap-tains for the drive were. an-nounced this week by the Chest chairman, who said the volunteer workers taking part in the canvass will be listed later. Monday Marks '54 Community Chest Kickoff Derry Township's 1954 Community Chest campaign this week was. poised to get under way, with the kick-off set for Monday. The local campaign is head-ed by Joseph S. Gumpher, with John Baum serving as treasurer. The 35 team cap-tains for the drive were. an-nounced this week by the Chest chairman, who said the volunteer workers taking part in the canvass will be listed later.
