HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 6 -0ED-0 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, JANUARY 2, 1958 No. 1 THE NEW YEAR GETS SMILES of welcome from Mrs. Helen Swartz, Mrs. Reiko Garman and Mrs. Dorothy Garman (left to right) as they hold the magic number. The Hershey Estates Greenhouse-Flower Shop staffers also hope the big "1958" will help letter writers to "remember the date —it's '58" 'Win Awards In Home Decorating Contest Christmas decorations at the home of M. Luther Halde-man, 440 Elm Avenue, were awarded the grand prize in the 1957 Christmas Home Decorating Contest sponsored by the Hershey Rotary Club. Fifteen other homes won cash prizes and twelve were cited for honorable mention. Judged on the night of De-cember 26, the Derry Town-ship area's beautiful Christ- -rnaistime-appearance proved a real challenge to the touring judges — Miss Fae Larson of Harrisburg, an interior decor-ator; Clyde P. Stacks, Pal-m y r a, a Milton Hershey School art instructor; and Frank H. Edris, Palmyra, Hershey Department Store decorator. The grand prize won by the Haldeman home brought with it a $50 cash award. Prize winners in various categories were announced as follows: Best window or doorway: First prize, $20, Harry M. Etter, 66 Cedar Avenue. Second prize, $10, Robert W. Smith, 761 Linden Road. Third prize, $5, Paul 0. Curry, 344 Maple Avenue. Honorable mention—John D. Groh, 218 Elm Avenue; Glenn A. Stover, 840 Linden Road; and John M. Liebfried, 813 Linden Road. Best lighting display: First prize, $20, Carmen J. Ranerio, 203 West Arcba Avenue. Second prize, $10, Benny Clemente, 333 West Caracas Avenue. Third prize, $5, Peter Per-in, 218 West Areba Avenue. Honorable mention—LeRoy Bachman, 553 East Derry Road; Lewis Loffreda, 107 Oak Lane; Samuel J. DeAn-gelis, 717 Linden Road; and Charles H. Skinner, 925 West Cherry Street, Palmyra (Palmdale). Digging into the Hershey News files for 1957 has brought to mind some of the happenings on the local scene. On looking them over and weighing them, we can report that Old 1957 was a pretty good year. Many important events took place, and numerous were the achievements recorded. To prod our readers' memories, we have compiled a re-view of some of the year's highlights. It is necessarily a synopsis and a spot-check .of the news, but should prove in-teresting as a sort of measure of the year. • - - January 1957 Mr. and Mrs. Merle Stuck-ey won grand prize in Rotary Club Home Christmas Decor-ating Contest. D. Frank Garman retired from Hershey Chocolate Cor-poration after nearly fifty-two years of service. Jay "Jackie" Weitzel was signed to the post of Hershey golf professional, succeeding his' late brother, John. Mr. and Mrs. Mar lyn Herbst received Hershey Lion's Club's annual Commu-nity Service Award. The Rev. Robert M. Lez-enby was installed as pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.
