EY Vol. 10 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, FEBRUARY 1, 1962 NO. 3 OPEN HOUSE at St. Joan of Are Church is being observed Monday‘through Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Father Mayan, the pastor, has extended a most welcome 'invitation to visit the New Church. Construction on the New Church was begun in September, 1960 and the Laying of the Corner Stone took place in .June of last year. The dedication of the Church will take place-ow-MemortarThereatay • 30th, which is also the Feast of the Patroness of the Parish. In the meantime, the Church will be used to accom&date the members of the parish with Sunday and weekday Masses and all devotions. A Record .297,240 Visitors' Toured Hershey Plant In 1961 Another record high has been set in the Visitors' Department of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation it was announced this week by Mrs. Verna Stoltz, hostess. This year's record showed a total of 297,240 persons were guided on the plant tour designed to ac-quaint the public with the chocolate processing and manufacturing methods. The previous high mark was established in 1960 with a total of 231,206 visitors touring the plant. The month:by-month figures "for 1961, as compiled by Mrs. Stoltz include: January 1,704; February 1,080; March 2,841; April 9,697; May 21,908; June 44,147; July 56,594; August 112,104; September 22,217; October 17,913; November 5,845; and December 1,190. - Annually, the biggest influx of visitors comes during the month of August, when the Pennsylvania Dutch Days are celebrated in the Hershey area. This year 112,104 persons passed through the Visi-tors' Lobby in this single month. Forming the regular Visitors' De-partment staff •are Mrs. Stoltz as hostess, Jean Yingling, Prudence Melly, Martha Feidt, Shirley Con-rad and Joyce Mione. This group is augmented by local girls during the summer vacation months. During the past year, the Visi-tors' Dept. took on a new look. Displays depicting the origin of raw materials - and manufacturing process of chocolate products were installed in the beautifully redec-orated rooms. READY TO TOUR The Hershey chocolate Plant under the capable guidance of Mrs. Prudence Melly are the following: Pam Ebling of Hershey; Albert Giglio and Joe 'Arcudi of Connecticut; Carolyn Gerhart of Hershey; and Gerald Alan Perffeto and Mrs. Patricia Perfetto of Reading. These visitors are but a few of the many persons who annually make the to ur of the Hershey Plant. First Mass In St. Joan Of Arc Church On Sunday; Dedication On Memorial Day; An Open House Invitation This Week The Most Reverend George L. Leech, D. D., J.C.D., Bis-hop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, has an-nounced that he will celebrate the First Mass in the New St. Joan of Arc Church on Sunday, February 4th at 7:30 a. m. He will be assisted by Rev. Daniel J. Mennitti, Vice-Chan-cellor of the Diocese and Rev. James A. LaCross, Secretary to Bishop Leech. The priests of the Parish will offer Masses at 9, 10:30 and 12 o'clock and this same schedule, together with the 7:30 Mass, will be maintained every Sunday in the future. Construction on the New Church was begun in September, 1960 and the Laying of the Corner Stone took place in June of last year. The exterior is built of Foxcroft stone, trimmed with Indiana limestone. The roof is a mixture of green and gray Vermont slate. A large statue of St. Joan of Arc, carved mit of limestone, stands on the canopy above the front doors with an enormous stained glass window as a background. The Main Altar is the focal point of the interior of the Church. It has been set in a large imposing background of gold mosaic forming a reredos upon which is superimposed a large Crucifix carved of Belgian marble with the corpus of white Carrara marble. Above the Cruci-fix is an arched Baldachino of gold anodized aluminum with a glass mosaic soffit: The gold mosaic reredos is decorated with white ileur-Lie-its, symbolic of St. Joan or Arc and France. Four other Marble Altars adorn the Sanctuary of the Church. The main altar is formed of Alps green marble with a yellow Sienna mensa. The center of the altar has been decorated with symbols of the Holy Eucharist carved in white marble. Roman Travertine marble wainscot deco-rates the walls of the Church above which is a light green colored sand finished plaster. The windows are rich stained glass carrying out the theme of the Kingdom of Christ and shields of St. Joan of Are. The ceiling is acoustical tile and the floors are of terrazzo marble laid in an interesting pattern of dif-ferent colors to bring into proper relation the brilliant colors of the altars, walls, windows and ceiling. Walls of the Baptistry and vestibule are covered with Travertine marble, the Baptismal Font, Pul-pit and Holy Water Fonts, are fash-ioned of Verde Green Marble. The dedication of the Church will take place on Memorial Day, May 30th, which is also the Feast of the Patroness- of the parish. In the meantime, the Church will be used to accommodate the mem-bers of the parish with Sunday and weekday Masses and all devotions. National Dental Health Week To Be Observed In Hershey February 4 to 10 In conjunction with National Children's Dental Health Week, February 4 to 10, the Dental Study Group, composed of dentists of Annville, Hershey, Highspire, Hum-melstown and Palmyra, have been conducting a poster contest for elementary students up to and in-cluding sixth grade. Prizes of $15, $10 and $5 will be awarded to stu-dents _with the best posters, ac-cording to Dr. Thomas Backen-stose. The dental group is coordinating the contest with the art teachers of the prospective schools, who will serve as the judges. A $25 Savings Bond will be awarded as the grand prize. Derry Township Elementary, St. Joan of Arc and Milton Hershey School are participating in the con-test. Purpose of the contest is to stim-ulate interest in good care of the teeth. In cooperation with the local den-tal societies, The American Dental Association will present a program to be shown on WGAL.
