IP HERSHEY NEW Vol. 7 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, OCTOBER 8, 1959 No. 41 . .... ..... BRONZE STATUE OF MILTON S. HERSHEY was presented by the Milton Her-shey School alumni to their alma mater at ceremonies on Friday, October 2, in special tribute to the 50th anniversary of the school. In photo at top of page are some of the figures in the presentation ceremony, which was one of the first events of the Alumni Homecoming Weekend: From left—James E. Bobb, chairman of the Board of Managers of the Mil-ton Hershey School; Melvin H. Garner, chairman of the Alumni Associations Statue Committee; Walter Hancock of Massachusetts, sculptor who created the statue; Alumni President (1959-60) Robert Beitzel, who made the presentation; and Dr. • John 0. Hershey, superintendent of the Milton Hershey School, who received the gift on behalf of the school. Standing to the rear of Dr. Hershey is Milton Hershey School student Stephen Quick, one of a group of students who formed an honor guard for the statue in the foyer of the junior-senior high school building. The half-size statue shown will be replaced in the foyer by a life-size identical creation which is yet to be cast in bronze. ALUMNI HOMECOMING PARADE FLOATS (photos immediately above) included a beatity queen brought to Hershey by the York Cthapter alumni; along With a big kiss for the school's 50th Anniversary. The queen is the daughter of Milton Hershey School alumnus Millard Horton (Class of 1940). Another of the elaborate floats was a repliea of the familiar school clock tower, shown at right as it left the stadium at the conclusion of the parade on Saturday morning. 1959 United Fund Drive Set To Start The 1959 united campaign for welfare funds opens here , on Monday, October 12, it was announced by the Derry Township Welfare Board which sponsors the local drive in collaboration with the Tr - County United' Fund of Dau-phin, Perry and Cumberland Counties. Heading the township-wide effort is B. Francis Garman, serving as chairman for the over-all campaign here. Rich-ard L. Uhrich is Lower Dau-phin County chairman for the United Fund drive. The Hershey Chocolate Corporation, Hershey Estates and Milton Hershey School announced their in-plan cam-paigns will begin on Monday. Other firms and organiza-tions poised to launch their 1959 drives are the H. B. Reese Candy Company, Acme Market, Derry Township School s, Miller Brothers, King Kup Candies, Inc., and M. L. Haldeman and Son. The business-industry in-plant campaign affords a unified system of conven-ient giving. By this means, persons have the oppor-tunity to lump their char-itable contributions into a single convenient plan — either by the popular pay-roll deduction system,or by cash contribution. Also benefitting substan-tially by the Derry Township campaign is the Lebanon County Community Chest. Persons designating the Lebanon County organization in making their contributions in the local drive will have their donations assigned to that agency.
