HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 5 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, AUGUST 29, 1957 No. 35 M.S. Hershey Day Observance Will Be Birthday Centennial William R. Smith Conductor Centennial Memorial Symphony Orchestra Musical artistry will mark the M. S. Hershey Day ob-servance in mid-September when the Centennial Mem-orial Symphony Orchestra presents its superbly disci-plined musicians in a special concert in tribute to the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of the founder of this community and its industry. The outstanding M. S. Her-shey Day event will be held in the Hershey Community Theatre on Sunday, Septem-ber 15, at two o'clock in the afternoon. Sponsored by the Hershey Rotary Club as a community project, the memorial concert is free to the general public and no tickets are required. The ninety members of the Centennial Memorial Sym-phony Orchestra are also members of the Philadelphia Orchestra which has won re-nown as one of the world's finest. Also appearing on the M. S. Hershey Day centennial program will be the Milton Hershey School's boys' glee club, directed by Virgil L. Alexander. Hershey Rotary Club Presi-dent Richard L. Uhrich will welcome the audience, along with greetings from Rotary District Governor William Kishpaugh. The invocation opening the observance will be offered by the Rev. Thomas W. Guinivan, pastor of Her-shey's First Evangelical United Brethren Church and Rotary Club chaplain. Eighteen Teachers Join Faculty Of Derry Twp. Roberts, Math; graduate of Hummelstown High School, Her-shey Junior College and Indiana State Teachers College; married to the former Sylvia Lewis of Hershey; Sports Recognition Night Is Community Club Salute Steve Owen, assistant coach of the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team and one of the real veterans of the gridiron sport, will be the guest speaker when the Her-shey Community Club holds its big Sports Recognition Night next Thursday evening, September 5, in the Commun-ity Building's Little Theatre at 7 p.m. The event has been sched-uled as a salute to the boys and girls who participated in the summer programs of the men's and women's divisions of the Community Club, club director Ralph L. Hoar an-nounced. Owen, a native Oklahoman, is currently in his thirtieth year in the National Profes-sional Football League as player or coach. He is the originator of the famed "Um-brella Defense" and the "A Formation," and is also noted as "one of the finest story tellers extant." The Community Club boys and girls, along with their parents and friends, will be welcomed to the Sports Recog-nition Night by Hershey Es-tates President John B. Soll-enberger. Serving as master of cere-monies will be James E. Bobb, Hershey Estates Vice-Presi-dent. Club physical directors Miss Kathleen Lewis and Donald Steve Owen Smith will outline briefly the coming fall and winter pro-grams and will present awards earned in the summer pro-grams. Hershey golf profes-sional Jay Weitzel will also be present to make presenta-tion of golf awards, and the Community Club tennis pro-. gram will be represented in similar fashion by Coach John McCool. Among other features of the Recognition Night will be the showing of a film on foot-ball. Walter Kieffer of Hummelstown Route 1, has been awarded an Alumni Me-morial Scholarship at the Pennsyl-vania State University. Nominated for the scholarship by the Penn State Alumnae Club of Dauphin County, she competed for one of the fifteen awards with nominees from the 70 official Penn State Clubs in the United States. Miss Kieffer, a graduate of Her-shey High School, was active in the Tri-Hi-Y, the Booster Club and Broadcaster staff during her at-tendance at the local school.
