HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 3 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, MAY 19, 1955 Judge Harold Medina Will Be M HS Speaker Judge Harold R. Medina, who made international history with his handling of the 1949 trial of eleven Communist leaders, will be the speaker at the Commencement exercises for the Milton Hershey School graduates on June 6, it was announced by Dr. John 0. Hershey, M.H.S. superintendent. The Commencement program is to be held in the Hershey Community Theatre. A member of the United States Court of Appeals, Judge Medina has a long and distinguished career as a practicing attorney, teacher, author and jurist. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was educated in the pub-lic schools there and at Hol-brook Military Academy. He graduated as a Phi Beta Kap-pa from Princeton University in 1909 and won the Ord-ronneaux Prize for the highest standing in his class on grad-uation from Columbia Law School in 1912. There never had been a law-yer on either side of his fam-ily and the struggle to get a foothold in the profession in the early days often called for working fourteen hours a day at assorted jobs. While working as a clerk in a New York law office, he was writing articles for the International Encyclopedia and preparing a new edition of a lawyers' manual, thus starting his famous course of lectures preparing students for the New York bar examination. On top of all this, he accepted a call from Harlan F. Stone, then dean of the Columbia Law School and later Chief Justice of the United States, to teach (Continued on Page Pour) Dr. Paul W. Hoon To Address Hershey High School Seniors The 214 members of the 1955 graduating class at Her-shey High School will hear an address by the Rev. Dr. Paul Whitman Hoon, profes-sor of Pastoral Theology at Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Dr. Hoon will deliver the high school Com-mencement address in the Hershey Community Theatre next Thursday evening. An ordained minister of the Methodist Church, Dr. Hoon is a Chicago-born son of a clergyman. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Sem-inary. In the course of two years of study abroad, he at-tended the University of Mar-burg in Germany and Cam-bridge University in England, receiving his Doctor of Phil-osophy degree from the Uni-versity of Edinburg, Scot-land, in 1936, the year of his ordination. Dr. Hoon has held pastor-ates in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. Prior to his appointment to the fa-culty of Union Seminary, he was minister for ten years at the First Methodist Church, Germantown, Philadelphia, and is a past president of the Philadelphia Council of Churches. He is the author of the "Exposition of the Epistle of St. John" in the Interpreters' Bible (to be published), and has contributed to various re-ligious and theological journ-als. He has also served for two years as lecturer in Practical Theology at Drew Theologi-cal Seminary, Edison, N. J. Historic Rite For Ground Breaking A ceremony from out of the pages of history will mark the groundbreaking on Saturday afternoon for a new Episcopal Church at Elm Avenue and Valley Road. The service will follow an old English "Order for the Breaking of Ground for a New Church," taken from a book now out of print. The public is invited to at-tend the event, which is set to begin at two-thirty p.m. The Right Reverend John Thomas Heistand, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Har-risburg, will preside at the service and will turn the first shovel of earth from the site i where the church altar s to (Vielianea Oa Page Twit) No. 20 HERSHEY JUNIOR COLLEGE'S graduating class of Sophomores will receive their diplomas at Commencement excercises in the Little Theatre on Monday evening. Fenstermacher and the college faculty. A number of awards, prizes and merit certificates were presented to members of the Sophomore Class. Rev. W.S. Blair Will Give Baccalaureate Sermon On Sunday Rev. William Sheldon Blair, pastor of Derry Presbyterian Church, will deliver the ser-mon at the combined Bacca-laureate Service for the 1955 graduating classes of Hershey Junior College and Hershey High School on Sunday eve-ping at seven-thirty p.m. The service will be held in the Her-shey Community Theatre. The Hershey High School Chorus will take part in the service. Opening the service will be the invocation by Rev. Thomas W. Guinivan, pastor of the First Evangelical Uni-ted Brethren Church. Rev. J. Herbert Miller of the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren will give the Scripture read-ing. Prayer will be offered by Rev. Stephen E. Schullery of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. J. R. MacDonald of Fishburn Evangelical United Brethren Church will give the benediction. Student music groups tak-ing part in the service, in addi-tion to the high school chorus, will be: string trio—Sandy Stover, Lois Shuler and Karl Moyer; mixed quartet — Laura Jean Breneman, Fay Eshleman, Donald Ebersole and Carlton Hoffer. Naval Commander Will Be Memorial Day Keynoter Delivering the keynote ad-dress at Derry Township's an-nual Memorial Day service will be Commander Russell R. Hedgecock, executive Officer of the Navy's Ships Parts Con-trol Center at Mechanicsburg. He will speak at the cerem-monies to be held at the Derry Township Court Of Honor at the Community Building at the conclusion of the Memorial Day parade. Prior to coming to Mech-anicsburg, Cdr.
