HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 5 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, OCTOBER 10, 1957 No. 41 A- TIME TO • REMEMBER.. - October 13 is a date that should call for a pause for reflec ikon. _ It carries a great signif-icance here. It was on October 13, 1945, that Milton S. Her-shey passed away. But his work and achievements continue. It has been said of Mr. Her-shey "His deeds are his monument; his life is our inspiration." It is a time to remember. Felton Ebersole Re-elected Fire Co. President Felton W. Ebersole was re-elected president of the Her-shey Volunteer Fire Company at the firemen's annual elec-tion session last week. At the same time, Percy Eckert was elected vice-pres-ident; Robert Raffensperger, recording secretary; John S tee n, treasurer; Eugene Gtay, fire chief; Paul Hetrick, Sr., first assistant chief; and Paul Willard, second assist-ant chief. Warren Habecker was re- TM as rus ee, ham Sheldon Blair as chap-lain. Elected to the House Com-mittee were Mario Moratti, Peter Perin and Elmer Reidel. The installation ceremonies will be conducted at the Nov-ember 5 meeting of the fire company, with Clarence J. Speicher conducting the in-stallation. Mr. Speicher head-ed the fund campaign which resulted in the procurement of the community ambulance. The election of Gray as new fire chief, succeeding George Trump who was not a candi-date for reelection, was by way of keeping the job in the family. Gray, who is also a former Hershey fire chief, and Trump, who nominated 'him for the post for the com-ing year, are brothers-in-law. DOUGH FROM DOUGHNUTS The Hershey High School musi-cal organizations — band, chorus and orchestra—will hold a monthly doughnut sale to cover their an-nual expenses, starting early this month, the school announced this week. The students will, offer three types of doughnuts which will he delivered the third Wednesday of each month. CASH LOST A lost ten-dollar bill was report-ed to the Hershey News in the hope that the. finder is looking for. the owner to return it. The money was lost recently in Hershey. Contact Hershey News. PAPER COLLECTION The Hershey firemen have set Monday, October 14, as the date for their next scrap paper drive in the community. The big enrollment of evening school students is pursuing a wide variety of vo-cational, commercial, home-making, arts and hobbies courses, as well as standard evening high school classes. Add Language Class To Evening School A new class has been added to Hershey Evening School year.. Ray _Evan director of the evening school, announced that a class in Russian language is now being taught by Professor Rudolf Sturm. The class has an enrollment of 17 pupils. Mr. Evans also announced an enrollment in evening school of 505 and that enroll-ments are still being added to most of the classes. Of this number, 162 are en-rolled for trade shop courses; 88 in the home-making divi-sion; 86 in business education; 32 in standard evening high school; and 137 for general education. Known as "The School of Opportunities," the adult ed-ucation program is headed by Evans, evening school direc-tor, with Rufus K. Eby in charge of the standard eve-ning high school operation. The school covers a wide range of subjects and has been a popular function each year. It is now in its twenty-sixth year. This year's enrollment of 505 topped last year's pre-vious record high by five. The courses run from Sept-ember 24 to March 27, 1958. Hershey School Pupils Get Chest X-Ray Exams Two hundred and eighty-four Eleventh Grade students of the Milton Hershey School received X-ray examinations as the traveling unit of the Tuberculosis and Health So-ciety visited the Hershey school on Monday. In addition, 147 members of the faculty, and school em-employees were tested also. Previously — on September 25 -- the mobile X-ray unit h a d tested 275 Eleventh Grade students at Hershey High School, along with 52 faculty members and em ployees, including cafeteria workers. The free chest X-rays are part of a current concen-trated program being con-ducted among schools of the area. ALL DIVISIONS Of The Hershey Estates Are Open And Work Is Available For All Employes Hershey Estates. In Big NATO Exercise Interior Communications Elec-trician Third Class William D. Hesse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. Hesse, Sr., of 24 W. Derry Road, Hershey, is aboard the frigate USS Willis A. Lee which took part in "Operation Strikeback," a large-scale naval and air exercise in North Atlantic waters during Sep-tember 19 to the 28. More than 150 vessels from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries participated in the 10-day operation. "Strikeback" marks the first time since 1953 that forces under NATO have been engaged in large-scale combined fleet ma-neuvers. Nations that took part included Canada, France, Norway, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. PTA's Committees At Work On Plans For Halloween Planning was going for-ward this week for the big annual community Halloween celebration, with the sponsor-ing group, the Derry Town-ship Parent - Teacher Asso-ciation, putting the tradition-al event together for 1957. Floyd R. Renshaw, chair-man of the planning commit-tee, announced that the Au-tumn festival will be held Thursday, October 31. Events will include the customary Halloween parade of costum-ed marchers and floats, fol-lowed by a climaxing celebra-tion in Hershey Stadium. All persons and organiza-tions of the community are again invited and urged to participate in the fun-festi-val. Renshaw listed the PTA Halloween celebration com-mittee heads as follows: Melvin Garner, judging; Brent Hancock, marshals; Isaiah Bomboy, properties and grounds; Mark Henry, prizes; Mrs. Warren Foley, refresh-ments; Mrs. Ralph Horst, bake sale; Charles Bikle, dance. Master of ceremonies at the Stadium will be Walter "Stuff" Douglas. Light Music On Program For Hershey Hi-Fl Club The Hershey Hi-Fi Club will be entertained next Thursday evening, October 17, with a program of record-ed music presented by Rikard Duncan of the Hi-Fi Club of the Central YMCA, Harris-burg. The music session will be held in the Students' Lounge, second floor of the Commu-nity Building, beginning at eight p. m. The program will consist of light music from well known shows and will fea-ture Carlo Nennotti's "The Telephone," along with other vocal and instrumental mu-sic.
