HERSHEY NEWS vol. 5 azalTrizo 0 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, NOVEMBER 14, 1957 No. 46 501h Anniversary GOLDEN WEDDING anni-versary was celebrated re-cently by Mr. and Mrs. Duilo Santarelli of 455 East Derry Road, when 'sixty well-wishers gathered .to note the happy occasion. • The event took place on 'October 19. The Santarellis were entertained by their 'family, which includes six children and nine grand-children. • Mr. Santarelli is a retired .employee of the Cocoa De-partment of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. Retired Employees Elect Wm. Seltzer Ass'n. President William Seltzer was elected president of the Hershey Re-tired Employees' Association at the group's November meeting last week at the Her-shey fire hall. Other officers elected are Paul Forry, vice-president; John Stahley, secretary; Ray Hoerner, assistant secretary; Roy Sternberger, treasurer; Claude Schlauch, assistant treasurer. Rev. Harvey Light, chap-lain; Aaron Gerlach, assistant chaplain; Mrs. Israel Early, pianist; and Mrs. William Runkle and Mrs. Edgar Schnee, assistant pianists. . Ninety-five persons attend-ed the meeting, which had Thanksgiving as its theme. The traditional turkey dinner Was prepared and served by the women of the association. The invocation was given by Rev. Light, special vocal music was directed by Mrs. Wilson Cake, and group sing-ing was led by Irvin Spancake, The organization of retired Hershey employees — both men and women — meets at the fire hall on the first Mon-day of each month. EDUCATION SPEAKER Speaker for the Hershey Junior College convocation held here on November 12 at 11 a. m., was Dr. William French, professor of Education at Muhlenberg College. Milton Hershey School Alumni Hold 27th Homecoming Here This Weekend The twenty-seventh annual homecoming of •the Milton Hershey School Alumni Asso-ciation this weekend will again make Hershey the focal point of interest for hundreds of the school's "old grads" ancl their families. The homecoming events will open on Friday evening with the traditional get-together buffet luncheon at the Park Golf Club. The alumni's combined busi-ness meeting and coffee-time is set for nine a.m. on Satur-day in the Social Room of the Community Building, high-lighted by the election of offi-cers for the coming year. .At 12:30 on Saturday, the alumni will parade to the Sta-dium, where the homecoming football game between the Milton Hershey School and Lancaster High School will get under way at one-thirty. The alumni class gathering in the school auditorium will take place at five to six o'clock on Saturday, followed by the annual banquet in the school dining hall. An assem-bly, with entertainment, is listed for the auditorium at seven-thirty, with dancing to the Spartan Orchestra in the school gym at RIM-o'clock. Sunday's observances will begin with attendance at the worship service in the Com-munity Theatre at nine a.m., when Dr. Herbert K. Cooper of Lancaster will be the speaker. At ten-thirty a.m., the an-nual Memorial Services will be held at Hershey Cemetery in tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Milton S. Hershey, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Staples, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Copenhaver, Mr. Percy S. Wilson, Mr. Clair Harnish, Mr. P. N. Hershey, •Mr. Charles F. Zeigler, and for former students who have passed away. At the business session on Saturday morning, mail bal-lots for the election of the alumni association officers will be opened and tallied. Nominees are: For President — E. Martin Kuhn (M.H.S. 1943), a resi-dent of Lancaster and present vice-president; Walter M. Douglas (1945), Hershey, now president of Homestead Chap-ter; and John Eshbach (1940), Lancaster, now serv-ing on alumni association's Social Committee. For, president-elect (to be-come president in 1959) — Robert F. Beitzel (1941) Lancaster, president of the Lancaster Chapter. For vice-president—Charles L. Smith (1941) Fort Loudon, Pa., member of association's Social Committee; and David B. Frantz (1937), Mt. Joy, member of Social Committee. For secretary—Kenneth V. Hatt (1941), Hershey, associ-ation secretary for ten years. For treasurer—William L. F. Schmehl (1938), Hershey, association treasurer for four years and former president. Named As Director Of Information Center Lawrence C. Burris has been appointed director of the Hershey Information Center, effective No-vember 8, it was announced by Hershey Estates this week. Mr. Burris' headquarters is located in the southwest eorner of the Woman's Club building on Chocolate Avenue. The Information Center was established as a source of informa-tion and service to visitors to this community. INSPECTOR CALLS — LATER "The Inspector Calls," a play which was scheduled to be per-formed by the Hershey Junior Col-lege Players on November 14 and 15, will be given on March 20 and 21 instead. The postponement was necessary because of the recent flu epidemic. Several student-players have to make up the academic work they lost through sickness. Vets' Day Speaker Cites Moral Need Speaking on the theme of "Missions," Lt. Col. George W. Almond, chaplain of the Army War College at Carlisle, told a Veterans' Day gather-ing in the Community Build-ing's Little Theatre last Sun-day evening that the United States is presently engaged in a far more vicious battle than those of World War One, World War Two or Korea. Chaplain Almond said: "We must increase our morality of citizenship." The Veterans' Day observ-ance was sponsored by Her-shey Post 386, American Le-gion, and Hershey Memorial Post 3502, Veterans of For-eign Wars, in cooperation with the Hershey Ministerial Association. Presiding was VFW Post Commander Clarence Jeffer-ies, with American Legion Post Chaplain John D. Emer-ich conducting the Memorial to Departed Comrades. The traditional "Taps" was sound-ed by Richard Hiler of the Hershey High School Band. The Rev. Robert M. Lezen-by gave the invocation, the benediction was pronounced by the Rev. J. Herbert Miller, the guest speaker was intro-duced by the Rev. William Sheldon Blair. ScriptUre was read by the Rev. B. Richard Templeton. Vocal music was presented by the Hershey Junior College Chorus, directed by Paul Fish-er, and featuring Kathryn Sweney as soloist. The musi-cal prelude to the program was played by Diane Bohner. Teams Ready For Community Campaign For United Fund The unified campaign of the Derry Township Welfare Board, in collaboration with the Tr -County United Fund; was poised this week to be-gin the, community, door-to-door phase of the drive for the benefit of charitable, recreational and character-building agencies. The community canvass will be conducted in Derry Township during the week beginning Monday, Novem-ber 18. The industrial phase of the united effort has been com-pleted, and the results are being compiled. The coming week's cam-paign is designed to contact Derry Township residents who have not already given to the '1957 drive through the in-plant campaign. Donors un-der the industrial plan were issued window sticker signi-fying they had already par-ticipated. Community can-vassers will not solicit homes displaying the United Fund stickers. Community Canvass Chair-man W. Royce Ward urged residents to contribute as gen-erously as possible when con-tacted by the volunteer work-ers. The campaign is vitally important to :the many chari-table and service agencies it supports, he pointed out. Ward also pointed to the convenience of the unified plan, which eliminates sepa-rate fund drives for the many benefitting agencies and com-bines charitable giving into one easy method.
