HERSHEY,.NEWS Vol. 5 0 HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, SEPTEMBER 12, 1957 No. 37 M. S. Hershey's M. S. Hershey Day Concert Designed For Enjoyment William M. Kishpa ugh, governor a Rotary Interna-tional's District 739 and a Hershey resident, will deliver the Memorial to M. S. Her-shey during this coming Sun-day's program in honor of the founder's one-hundredth birthday anniversary. The M. S. Hershey Day program is annually sponsored by the Hershey Rotary Club. The event .will be held at two p.m. in the Hershey Com-munity Theatre, and will fea-ture a concert by the Centen-nial Memorial Symphony Orchestra. Appearing on the pro-gram also will be the forty-voice Milton Hershey School Glee Club directed by Virgil L. Alexander. The fine local school singing group will offer two selec-tions— Song of Friendship and God Ever Glorious. The Rev. Thomas W. Guin-ivan, Rotary Club chaplain, -will give the invocation as the observance opens, and the assemblage will be greeted by Rotary Club President Rich-ard L. Uhrich. The National Anthem will be played by the Centennial Memorial Orchestra. The concert program, with William R. Smith conducting the orchestra, will begin with Prelude to "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg," by Wagner, which will be followed by Symphony No. 8, in b minor ("Unfinished"), by Schubert, and Incidental Music to "A Midsummer Night's Dream," by Mendelssohn. The Memorial to M. S. Hershey by the Rotary dis-trict governor will open the second portion of the pro-gram, following intermission. (Continued on l'ade Two) Hershey. Estates Contract Talks Representatives of Hershey Estates and the Union have negotiated for some time in an effort to reach agreement on a new contract. The present contract expires at midnight Monday, Septem-ber 16, although there have been some mistaken rumors that it expires Sept. 15th. At the moment the parties are negotiating and it is the hope of everyone concerned that agreement can be reach-ed, wherein the Hershey Es-tates establishments can re-main competitive so as to stay in business and thus insure the wellbeing of all its em-ployees as well as the entire community. Birth Anniversary To Top Musicians In M S. Hershey Day Concert Orchestra WILLIAM R. SMITA LORNE MUNROE DAVID MADISON The Centennial Memorial Symphony Orchestra, whose concert in the Hershey Com-munity Theatre on Sunday afternoon will keynote the special M. S. Hershey Day ob-servance, will be composed of ninety of ,the world's finest musicians. The concert of music ap-propriate to the salute to the memory of Hershey's founder on the occasion marking the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth will 'begin at two o'clock. The people of the com-munity, as well as all friends of Hershey every-where, are invited to at-tend. There will be no ad-mission charge, and no tickets are required. The M. S. Hershey Day program is annually sponsored by the Hershey Rotary Club as a community service project. The Centennial Memorial Symphony Orchestra will be conducted in its concert by William R. Smith, asSiStineto Conductor Eugene Ormandy of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The orchestra appearing in the Hershey concert will be composed entirely of artists who are members of the renowned Philadelphia Or-chestra, Mr. Smith, who will con-duct the Centennial Memorial Orchestra, was named assist-ant to Conductor Ormandy at the begininng of the 1952-53 sea s o n, understudying the Musical Director, preparing all scores, conducting reading rehearsals of new composi-tions and assisting in the preparation of new works. He was given the title of As-sistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the start of the 1956-57 season. He has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra both (Continued on Page Two) Cocoa Bean Game Set For Stadium Preparations were complete as the week began for the football ac-tion and ceremonies which will ring up the curtain on scholastic gridiron play here on Friday eve-ning as Hershey High School meets the Milton Hershey School in the fifteenth annual game for the Cocoa Bean Trophy. The game is set for Hershey Stadium, starting at eight p. m. The game is sponsored by the Hershey Rotary Club, with the proceeds going to the playground equipment fund for Derry Town-ship's Memorial Field. Appropriate ceremonies before the game and at halftime will salute the one-hundredth annivers-ary of the birth of Milton S. Her-shey. Be Observed Milton Snavely Hershey 1857- 1945 "His deeds are his monument; his our inspiration." Challenging Example One hundred years ago tomorrow—September 13 —Milton Snavely Hershey was born in a rural area of Lower Dauphin County near the site where thriving modern industry and a lovely community of homes would eventually perpetuate his name. On Sunday—September 15—the people of the com-munity will render homage to his memory, in just tribute to his greatness as a man of vision and vital responsi-bility to his fellow man. The 1957 M. S. Hershey Day program will honor a man who, born in modest circumstances, had the energy, innate ability and foresight to build lasting and living monuments to his name. His .was one of those inspiring American success stories that have enriched this nation with great tradi-tion. The M. S. Hershey philosophy of wise use of nat-ural resources (the extensive development of agricul-ture) and human resources (the Milton Hershey School, plus the recreational, cultural and educational facilities of the community) is an outstanding facet of his life, matched only by his genius in the industrial-business field. His achievements make his example challenging to follow, but nevertheless provide all of us with a set of standards worthwhile to live by. The M. S.
