HERSHEY NEWS Vol. 3 OVA • ; HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, DECEMBER 22, 1955 No. 51 $50 Grand Prize In Decoration Prize Listings Two hundred and fifty dol-lars in cash prize awards will be distributed in this year's Home Christmas Decoration Contest, it was announced this week by the Hershey Rotary Club which sponsors the pro-ject in the community. Heading the list of prizes is the grand prize award of fifty dollars. Awards will also be given in four categories, with eight prizes -- including three cash prizes — in each category. The various categories are: Best window or doorway. Best lighting display. Most original decoration. • Most artistic. The area to be judged, and eligible for awards, includes all of Derry Township, the announcement stated. Judging the home decora-tions will be three men quali-fied by virtue of their experi-ence — Roy W. Deets of the Lebanon Valley Offset Print-ing Company; Roy H. Dun-dore, Lebanon decorator and display service operator; and Frank I. Edris, display man-ager at the Hershey Depart-ment Store. The judges will get together on Wednesday, December 28, (Continued on Page Two) Community Prepares To Celebrate Christmas 1955 NATIVITY SCENE done in amazingly realistic fashion is this one located at Milton Hershey School farm-home Applehurst. Depicting the true story of Christmas, the scene is lifelike and well lighted. Christmas decorations in the area this week gave the town and countryside a brilliant glow, reflecting the bright spirit of the season. Homes, churches and business and industrial buildings display .the glowing trappings of Christmas. Clever Elected To Head School Board Clever E. Ernst, 165 West Chocolate Avenue, was elected president of the Derry Township Board of School Directors at the board's annual reorganization meeting held earlier this month. Ernst has completed one full six-year term as a school director and was reelected to the board last November. He has formerly served in the post of school board treasurer. The new board president is well known here as the operator of the Hershey Filling Station. Also at the reorganization meeting the school directors elected E. Carl Foreman as vice-president. Other officers of the board, who will continue to serve in their respective positions, are Marlin E. Balsbaugh, secre-tary, and William H. Black, treasurer. Paul 0. Curry, who was elected to the board last Novem-ber, was sworn into office. Curry served as a school director briefly on an appointment to fill out the unexpired term of the late Earl R. Lollo who died while president of the board. Curry now begins his full six-year term as an elected member of the board. Other members of the present school board are E. Morse Heisey and Ezra E. Grubb. Following the reorganization session, the school direc-tors were hosts at a dinner meeting in the school cafeteria. Guests were the wives of the directors, members of the school administrative staff and their wives and representa-tives of the Hershey Estates and Hershey Chocolate Corporation. "" •'):Pe• Retired Employees Are Feted At Christmas Season Parties Many an old friendship was renewed on Tuesday and Wed-nesday evenings when the re-tired employees of the Her-shey Chocolate Corporation, Hershey Estates and Milton Hershey School got together at Christmas dinners held in the Community Building Din-ing Room. The retired persons, and their wives or husbands, were guests of the Corporation, Es-tates and Milton Hershey School at the seasonal celebra-tions. Some 275 persons at-tended each night. Greeting the guests was Mr. P. A. Staples, Chairman of the Board of Managers and President of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. Also attending the event were members of the Board of Managers and members of the Board of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. Retired employees attend-ing either the Tuesday or Wednesday evening dinner en-joyed a genuine Christmas-time party, filled with a real holiday atmosphere. Colorful Yule decorations added to the spirit of the occasion and com-radeship was encouraged by a tasty turkey dinner. Carol singing and other music also helped to put the party on a ver y enjoyable Christmas basis. Special dinner music was played for the guests of honor by a string ensemble from Hershey High School.
