Title | Letter from Bobby Johnston to Warren [Letter 388] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 331 July 12 Thursday - 9:00 P.M. Dearly Beloved: Have just finished clipping Time for you, and addressed the envelope you sent. I will watch out for stamps for Yama - what sort of a collection does he have? Finally got a box ready today to mail. Baked some peanut butter chocolate brownies - also packed - anchovies (do you still like them) another tube of china cement - something you always seem to put to good use, and the last of the strawberry jam - hope it gets thru to you without spilling this time. Went shopping for some essentials this morning - no TP (we’re using Kleenex from the Ship's Store), [pg 2] no butter, paper napkins, bacon, etc. etc. was lucky to find a roll of wax paper. I wonder what it will be like to shop after the war - it will be a new experience for me, because all my housekeeping has been wartime. This afternoon we were all set to brave the fog and go down to the beach, but had just gotten started when the stroller broke down again. I don't think its going to last another month. I have our name on a list for a new all metal de luxe job, but their's no telling when the store over in Monterey will get them in I guess its just as well we didn't go to the beach - but it sure is hard trying to keep [pg 3] Wendy out of mischief. I'm trying to teach her to say “Woo-woo!” with appropriate facial expression, but the nearest she comes to it is “Wow-wo” with a pugnacious look. Tonight, shortly after she’d gone to sleep - she woke again, corners of her mouth turned down, and tears in her eyes - bad dream I guess - perhaps she dreamed I was giving her an extra portion of cottage cheese! I picked her up, and in a minute or two she was sound asleep again. I'm glad you wrote Betty and John a note - there’s so little anyone can say. You don't suppose the Silex bowls were broken accidentally on purpose, do you? I'm drinking G. Washington now, but will haul [pg 4] out the electric coffee pot when you come home. Those were interesting tid bits you wrote about B29 pilots. Latest news from Casa by way of Helen - The last 2 remaining teams have been disbanded. There are now 1,500 officers idling. There are only a handful of 8th section men left including the Boulder men en masse. Jim Johnstone is waiting on an island for something, but his wife doesn't know what. Their son was born a week ago, and Jim missed being there by just a few weeks. We did have a lucky break in that respect, and I shall never cease to be grateful. Dreamt I was having another baby last night - must be - my sub-conscious - or are you working on me by remote control? Goodnight darling- I love you- Bobby |
