Title | Letter from Bobby Johnston to Warren [Letter 340] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 280 May 30 - 8:15 P.M. Wed. My Dearest Darling: We’re sparkling clean tonight - I'm giving the house a thorough overgoing in honor of Wendy's birthday. This afternoon I did some ironing too - after we get our car, lets make the next thing on the list a weekly visit from a good laundress and ironer. Wendy's ruffles, tucks, pleats etc. are driving me wild. Last night Gerry stopped by and I walked down to the Post Office with her. When I got home I had 2 jiggers of Imperial in half a glass of water, and went right to sleep. This past month has been hard, and I feel all uncertain and worried again. I can't [pg 2] help but think about it, and sometimes I get to the point of wondering how anyone can come out of this war safely. I think the waiting and uncertainty of what each day will bring is the hardest part. Wendy woke up early this morning, and I took her into bed with me. Both of us fell asleep immediately and slept til quarter of 10:00. Today being a holiday there wasn't any mail, but we sent you an EFM telegram. Its supposed to be for Wendy's birthday, but probably won't reach you til Father's Day. I learned that you had finally acquired a cable address when Reini sent Gerry a message for their anniversary. I'm [pg 3] anxious to see how long this will take to reach you. I was told from two days to two weeks depending on prevailing conditions. Tomorrow I expect to get the rest of the fixings for Wendy's party - Also a present for Father - think I'll get a leather snapshot folder from us so that he can carry some of little sweetie's pictures around as Mother does. Wendy has picked up some new tricks. Now that its necessary for me to say, “No, No” so often, Wendy has taken to looking at me saucer-eyed and shaking her head in the negative! In the past week or so she has started to exclaim “ooh” or “aw” every time either of us drops anything on the floor - And remember how she [pg 4] used to crow like a little rooster? Now, with a strained expression on her face she says “Gawk” and ends up with a relaxed smile and receding redness of the face. Your going to be so delighted when you see her, I can hardly wait. Pretty soon we'll reach the half way mark, and we'll be racing toward the end of your eighteen months from then on. I hope the next nine months aren't too rough going, but then all I can do is hope. Am going to read and knit for awhile now, and then go to bed. I'm working on a pink sweater for Wendy, and as soon as its finished I'm looking forward to starting your socks. I love you my precious darling- Bobby |
