Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 3] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | Forgot to get Lucille's address Penn Station (Smoking Rm) 1 minute too far from 9th [- -?] N.Y.C., N.Y. Sunday, quarter past traintime Hi, Sweetie! Well, I guess I ain't what I used to be with my erstwhile uniform practice of 2 minutes to spare. The address tells the story. (It began with 3 different aspirants for tapas at [Aust?] and 119th waving wildly but in vain. It wasn't long before I became patiently resigned, came back to signal a goodby and deceitfully took the next bus. I hadn't thought then, at almost 4:00, of catching the 4:30 train, but it was a little tantalizing to miss it by one minute!) It's been such a nice day, despite the weather (which isn't very important anyhow if you have something to do) - and the past week in general leaves a pleasant little glow that I'll carry about with me in the Nation's Capital. Yep - you guessed it! I'm on my way (just like old times, isn't it?) Got on early, noted that there were 14 or 15 coaches, shortly to be filled up, and just 1 diner; so - you know me - here it is 6:05 and I'm all through dinner. As I get on the car I'm now in, I see my first seersucker Wave uniform, young, fresh and [pg. 2] trim. It follows me to the dining car and hesitates as tho it would like to sit at the same table with me but only for a second, as the waiter comes to carry out what is apparently standard dining car policy in having all tables occupied before filling any. I wonder whether to ask it if it’d like company (I trust myself fully since it has a Prudish complexion, nose and lips and is not at all sexy) but then it occurs to me that even the pure have fancies and maybe a married man wouldn't satisfy its; better give it a fair chance. About this time a nice looking j.g. with red hair is seated opposite it and they strike up a friendly chat at once. (He too wears a wedding ring.) As I become absorbed in Time I vaguely overhear him saying “…but it's only 9 weeks old…”, perk up my ears, and then lose interest when I discover he's talking about a springer spaniel. I guess I shall have to learn about Washington the hard way. When I get there. (I found my map, by the way). The sky is clearing and it promises to be a fair evening. I think I shall leave you now a little while to check the balances and do some reading; this present exercise is a bit of a strain. |
