Title | Letter from Bobby Johnston to Warren [Letter 195] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 137 Jan. 22 - Mon. 5:30 P.M. My dearest darling: This has been another one of those days only more so. Not helped a bit by the fact that I met Barbara Corrigan downtown this afternoon (she had just rented a house on the first try!) and she told me that the Boulder man would probably be here at least til next summer - and on top of that about all the men in Washington who expected to be there for the duration. Damn it all why did they have to pick you - it just doesn't seem fair, and I can't see any reason for it - or any side that makes me feel any better about it - Just looks so horribly hopeless without anything for us to look forward to - sometimes now I wonder if there is a law of averages. Just can't write any more tonight darling- I feel as if I'm falling into a million pieces- Please come home to me - Bobby [pg 2] 8:00 P.M. Darling - just couldn't mail that note to you without adding a P.S. Had a long cry - fell asleep, and feel a bit steadier now. It is a hard dose to take - awfully hard. I suppose I should feel ashamed of myself for feeling as I do, but I don't. I'm sick as hell of this life, but I just don't have the energy or will to pick up and move anyplace else. No mail from you again today - and that never helps. If I wasn't so tired I’d walk down to the post office tonight - guess I'll have to wait til the morning. In the afternoon I expect to go riding with Bev over at Pebble Beach. It will be good to wipe some of the cob webs away. Wendy's cough has me a bit worried - there is so much pneumonia going around, especially among the babies. She coughed a good while tonight - so I fixed some orange juice for her, and she seems to be sleeping easier. She is so sweet - I just can't stand the thought of anything hurting her. Bev brought her a cunning pair [pg 3] of bright yellow rompers - Remember Janice Robbins? (You were speaking to her husband Joe at Bev's cocktail party) She is expecting a baby in July, and has to stay in bed the whole nine months because she has had so many miscarriages. Speaking of babies - Barbara C. thought she was going to have a baby this Fall, but it turned to be an ovarian cyst which she had removed at the Navy Hospital. Terribly tired darling - feel all wore out - And so to bed - Come to me tonight - I need you - Bobby [pg 4] DEAR DADDY THANK YOU FOR THE HANKIE. MY COLD IS ALL GONE. TODAY I AM WEARING YELLOW ROMPERS, MUMMY SAYS I LOOK LIKE A DICKY BIRD. I CAN STAND UP IF MOMMY HOLDS MY HAND. LOTS OF HUGS AND XXXXXXXXXX WENDY [pg 5] Wendy did this all herself - [SCRIBBLE] |
