Title | Letter from Bobby Johnston to Warren [Letter 143] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 88 Saturday 3:00 P.M. Dec. 9th My dearest darling: Wendy has changed so in the past two weeks - siting up alone - using a high chair for meals and practicing creeping. She does very well until she collapses in the middle. No mail from you again today, and I am so disappointed. Received a package from mother today containing a pair of red courderoy overalls for Wendy and also a pair of light blue sharkskin ones. If she keeps on growing at this rate, it won't be long before she will be wearing them. Got the baby shoes for my bracelet this morning - they are exactly the same as the ones you got. Don't know whether it's me or my tan shirt, but I sure had a time shaking the men in town this morning - maybe it's the weather - I was polite, but cold and very much amused. I met Gil and even he went out of his way to be nice, and stand and talk to me. Oh well it's good for the ego - Maybe men just like gals slightly scrawny with a mad face because they haven't received any mail from their husbands. Stopped by to see Bev and asked her to bring Gil up for a farewell highball this afternoon. At this rate there won't be much green label by the time Bev C. [pg 2] gets back. Bev gave me two packs of cigarettes this morning and I was able to buy one package at the store so I am stocked up for next week. Think I'll get some brandy and sherry for when Helen and the Mil. Gov’t peoples hit Carmel. I'll be so glad when you get back to Hawaii again, and I can start baking. Bought some chocolate and put it away. Try to let me know somehow soon enough before you leave so that I can have a package and letters waiting for you when you arrive. Paula came over this morning, and wanted to know if I’d split a roast with her. I couldn't very well say no, and I don't want to condemn the gal if there is no real reason to, so I said yes. However I told her I didn't want to take Wendy over at night, and they are coming here for dinner. Just in case the stable man decides to pay her a visit, I old Bev about it, and she said he's been bothering a lot of women around town. Guess Paula gave him a little encouragement, and that was all he needed. Am going to mail our Christmas cards tomorrow - hope I didn't leave anyone off the list that you particularly wanted to remember- I love you darling, and can hardly wait for you to be home again. Bobby |
