Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 11] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 2632 Woodley Place Friday 5:30 pm Darling, I didn't write you last night; I was tired from walking around town and went right to bed, thinking I could get a note off this morning before leaving. Then I discovered my shoes were still wet from last night's shower, had to clean up a black pair and replace the laces and wasn't ready when Hugh came by. Shopping was fun, if rather frustrating as far as baby things in general were concerned. I didn't see a thing I was looking for or liked otherwise. But I bought you a present for the hospital. I spent half an hour looking at different kinds, trying to think whether you’d like them and not having that pleasant feeling of certainty about them; suddenly I thought of something I was sure of but couldn't remember how to ask for it; I turned around and there it was at a counter right in back of me. You will laugh when I tell you the brief case episode. Despite your imprimatur of approval by telephone, I wasn't quite sure about the one I described for an everyday brief case. I liked it, and it was a good value with many potential uses, but…then I had another thought, decided it would not be hopelessly extravagant, and went back and bought both the big one and a small $7 black handle-less one. I was greatly satisfied with my purchases even though I realized they would be hard on the month's budget. I'll bring them along for you to see tomorrow. This must be a very trying time for you, darling. While I am not conscious of any anxiety at all, I have been a little [?] and restless all week. Well, we must just be patient, I guess; the delay is quite natural. Won’t it be wonderful if it does turn out to be Saturday night! [pg 2] 8:15 - just after phoning Toni and I are at the Shorehaven [s?] - I had a wonderful meal - best sea bass I've ever eaten - in the Grill for about a dollar. Toni, who’d eaten lunch at four o'clock just had ice tea and strawberry pie. We were going to a movie after I phoned you but there's nothing decent playing. Just now she's watching people - this is a lovely hotel and the lobby is fascinating - but I don't want to keep her waiting - By now, darling; see you soon Warren |
