Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 55] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | VII 29 September 7 pm My darlings, I've been so disappointed not to hear from you beyond your first two letters - but that's always the way here, apparently, for a week or so. I should get a batch of them in the next few days. I do earnestly hope that you’re getting mine regularly - I've written every day so far, though I may have repeated a number twice or missed one - I'll try to write down each one and check it off. I really have a difficult job cut out for me and the fact that it's something of a strain at first helps make up for the strain I know you've been under - though mine, like yours, is sure to ease in time. Remember that, darling, bear with me and keep your chin up - we’re sharing something together. Can't say what I am or will be doing, of course, nor will you be able to guess, but at least I can reassure you that its very interesting and not dangerous. Just as your present situation does, so does mine make demands on me which I was not altogether prepared for but which I know I can meet if I must. The whole thing's a dirty job to be done, sweetie, and always remember that we’re doing it together. Someday perhaps we will be able to join together in opposing this sort of thing - don't be cynical, honey, it's worth fighting for; and don't fear that I'll lose all regard for home and a private life in some zealous liberal undertaking. The time is past when I’d sacrifice anything heedlessly - But whatever my professional future, we know pretty [pg 2] well what we want of each other and in the way of a family; try to remember that it's that very thing we’re fighting for the right to now. You must have your picture taken for me, darling - one with Wendy and one by yourself. Just pretend you’re looking at me and it'll come out well. I'm not sure when I'll be able to do any shopping in town - I should have done it on my last day off, because it looks as though I'll be working on my next one. Before too long, I hope, I'll be able to get the things you asked me to look for. As I reread the above, it sounds as though I hardly have time to sleep in, but that's not true. I feel very fit and it's just that the shopping district is so far away to get to without a few hours off. Did I tell you that Henry has a swell job that suits him very well and may help him determine his post-war future? - Saw Ed Buchanan today - he sends you and Wendy his best wishes; Jane and the kids are living in Kentucky. Also Steve [?eckle?burg] - he's really an awfully nice guy and like several others was very glad to see me, said he [?] and have dinner with him sometime soon, asked about you and Wendy. Also Dan Meloy (or did I mention him?) Henry (?-I forget) - the tall guy who used to be at all the Dean's ‘parties’ - and others whom I'll think of in time - Johnny Clark…a whole batch of them. I love you, darling Warren |
