Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 68] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | Sunday 15 October 2:30 pm XXIII Hi, Sweetie - Just finished “Tortilla Flat” (when I should have been studying here at the office - no compulsion or regret, but just have a lot I want to read up on) I thought it a delightful little book with considerable wisdom to it. I'll browse thru it for half an hour sometime soon and then send it back to you for our growing library. Now down to work. Tuesday 17 October 2:30 pm This will be a short one because although I have lots and lots to say, I want to get a letter off in today's mail (there were two in yesterday's, I think) and write you a long one tonight. Yesterday was a very big day. First of all, there was the phone call. I was just delighted, darling, that you sounded so natural, and eager both to talk and to listen. I had been afraid it would be hard for you, and consequently I was a little tense as well as excited. Next time I'll be prepared to talk in the nice easy tone and I'll make a little list of things to say without trying too awfully hard to stick to it. Try not to mind if we are cut off before you hear me say “I love you darling - goodby now-I'll call again when I can” because I think I'll plan each time for four minutes. That's an even $15 and $18-something for 5 minutes seems a little stiff when the main thing is to hear each other's voice (it makes such a difference doesn't it!) and not to try to say everything. On the other hand, 3 minutes is a little too brief. I can talk only about people I name in the application, and I'll probably only name Wendy. You may ask me about anybody except that I may have to limit answers to questions about service personnel to Yes or No. You may tell me about anybody. I did love talking to you, darling, and look forward even more eagerly to next time. It may not be very soon, but perhaps a little while after Christmas. There's just no way of knowing now. Oh damn it, Sweetie, how cruel - I did miss the mail after all. I'll try very hard not to let that happen again, or will do it as seldom as possible. Your letters mean so much to me (and you’re a wonderful correspondent) and I know how much mine must mean to you. The hibiscus picked up from the ground outside the cottage where Henry and I spent the night. They grow everywhere here, in many different colors, and are so lovely (grow on [?] Til later darling Warren |
