Title | Letter from Bobby Johnston to Warren [Letter 52] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | Wednesday [9/27] 9:45 P.M.! My dearest darling:- This has been a Carmel Day like late November day in the east - I half expected to see snow flakes! All in all I am getting more organized and here it is almost ten o'clock and I'm still not in bed!! This afternoon I took Wendy down to Bev C. and Bev N. and I went shopping downtown. Funny thing - this is Gil's second marriage - and not as smooth as might be supposed. I just had a number of odds and ends to get, but I did succeed in ordering two tin boxes for mailing to you - think when they’re empty they may come in handy. Went to the P.O. and found the letter I mailed to you yesterday back for more postage - so I fixed it and sent it out again. I'm having more trouble with your letters. I started to the P.O. with 3 letters -1 to you, [?], and 1 to Muz, and when I got to the P.O. I didn't have them - Retraced my steps without luck - [pg 2] perhaps someone mailed them for me - I hope so. I spent a short while with Bev C. and she drove me home with Wendy, my bundles and Bev N. They stayed for a cigarette and remarked again on how cute the house is. The living room looks so nice. I have the map of the Pacific up, and also the one of the Peninsula - yes, me with maps! Ordered $5 worth of fireplace wood as that's the minimum they'll deliver - ought to last a long time - also, sent out the laundry. We got [?] bill - $3.50 - will have to wait til the allotment comes, as I'm running close. After feeding Wendy and putting her to bed I fixed my supper on a tray (sandwich, tomato, piece of apple pie Bev gave me and milk) and ate it here in the living room - thinking how wonderful it will be to get dinner for you when you are home again - There are a few times in the day that are especially hard and dinner time is one of them. Bev C. asked me to a cocktail party tomorrow, but I don't think I'm quite ready - Friday night she invited me to supper and then to see Dr. Wassell in Monterey - providing the Nettletons are home so that they can keep an eye on Wendy- She has been so cunning today - ‘Talking’ [pg 3] a blue streak something that sounded like - Hiyah yai- She tries so hard to hold on to her bottle and opens her mouth when she sees it coming. I do so want you to see the inside of the hour - will try to get some [?] and take some pictures soon. Am looking forward to tomorrow and the slim chance that there may be a letter from you - If I could just curl up beside you for a few minutes Talking of subconscious - all day today I was singing ‘There's a great day coming Maryana! Until I suddenly realized you were right darling, there is only your homecoming to look forward to now, and already 6 days are passed. Our time in San Francisco was a bonus and I don't even think of it as a good-bye - that's our true á bientot, and the way I’d really wanted it right along. So to bed - a mug of warm milk, a kiss to you - And lots of love from Wendy and me to our darling daddy- Bobby |
