Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 53] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | #5 Wed., Sept. 27, 7:30 pm My dearest one, Already I miss you more than I thought I would for several weeks to come. Not that this isn't enough to do for recreation (enough to retain its novelty for a couple of months, anyhow - the city, free movie every night, the beaches, etc.; apparently it grows very monotonous after about 4 months) - it's just that you've become so much a part of me that it seems as though I must just be away on a weekend and will pop home any minute to tell you all about it. Henry said last night that three things had helped Jean - living with Millie, who was an intellectual stimulus to her; the fact that Jean has matured to the point where her lack of college is of no consequence, and has gradually developed the intellectual curiosity which a good college would have given her; and being in a position to sympathize with others in her position. Henry said that talking to you the afternoon she came to visit us at 419 did her lots of good - that is, trying to reassure you that somehow one does live through it all. It seems that she [?] had a hard time for the first few weeks, and now and again has recurring attacks of loneliness, but manage to survive them and grow in spite of them. Both John and Henry thought your visit to their mother (which they were very pleased to hear about - said you really should have taken Wendy) was a swell idea, and John hoped you would meet Margerita. I'll be waiting anxiously to hear whether you did. Darling, it was so good to get your first letter (#1 and #2, and the cute birthday card with a dollar in it) this morning - I can hardly wait to get mail written after I left. I do so hope you’re managing all right, sweetie. That was an awfully nice letter from Muz, wasn't it? I'm returning it in case you want to keep it. - I tucked away the clipping of prize letters for future reference (though I'll [pg 2] be damned if I could sit down and write one cold-bloodedly - on second thought I think I'll throw it away and write what I feel). Do the gay swatches mean that you finally found your cotton material? I hope so. I'm still not quite sure that I approve of baby [pol?] [?] - too something or other - but if you love them I guess I'll learn too, honey. I was just full of important things to say to you this morning and [I might?] they've vanished - that's ‘cause I sat up til almost two talking to Henry, a little too late what with getting up at seven. But it was swell to see him again, and I expect to see as much more of him as I can. To bed now - a big hug and kisses to big and little sweetie. Warren I wrote to Muz and to mother and father today - I asked Mother to change the address on Time and have it sent to Carmel for you to forward. But actually I want you to have it - it's silly to get a subscription out here, because it will take a month and I'll be buying the Hawaiian edition as it comes out anyhow. W. |
