Object Description
Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 4] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 2632 Woodley Place Wednesday 11:15 p.m. My dearest - I've just returned from seeing “Lady in the Dark” with Hugh and Toni - I loved it and had an altogether delightful evening. Told Toni about How we got married on the way home; the farther away we get from it the more mellow my perspective on it becomes and its humorous side grows less hectic and more merry; I still feel regretful that is couldn't have been more of a wedding for your sake, but because it was that way out of circumstance and necessity it seems more and more right as it was. On the way in I stopped to chat a little with Aunt Kate (Mrs. Kern to me, of course) who wanted to know how I happened to get into this field; [?] [?] Toni with a good deal of common warmth. Toni is a very sweet and I think a rather rare person. I'm glad you like her so much. Toni brought me your two letters when she met Hugh and me in town (Hugh was teaching me a Chinese fingers game and a rhyme that goes with it, counting to ten over three glasses of beer) and I read them in snatches during the evening, as when we stopped for [pg. 2] chalk lick sodas after the movie - I missed you this evening, Sweetie; you would have enjoyed being with us, but don't begrudge me it because it's such fun talking about you and I can't do that when you’re around. Your Monday letter sounded so busy! it was comforting to know you can still find so much to do. I'm glad you like the small presents and laughed aloud at the soda fountain at the part about your resolution to carry a handbag and be a lady after the baby comes. Darling. I do love my pixillated [?] and I’d never forgive you if you squelched her altogether. (The crossed out part just sounded too sticky - a sort of benevolent dispensation from his august and condescending majesty) Glad things are getting done by the building staff - I hope they don't [?] out on us and have to be reminded again. I know how you must feel about KeKo, darling - permanent separation seems so hard - you do what you'll feel best about. (I’d advise giving him to the lady, I think. I'll miss him too. [?] [?] get another - or a puppy-later on). Job for you when you've nothing more important to do. Go through the whole journal and write in days of the week for the rest of the year, checking ahead with the calendar every couple weeks. It'll save you trouble in the end. - Such a wonderful long letter! Keep [?], precious, and dream of me nights I love you Warren |
