Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 432] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 378 Monday 19 Nov. 6:30 pm My dearest, No mail today, but perhaps I don't deserve it for skipping a letter in this morning's outgoing mail. Yesterday morning I was awakened at seven by Barrett who proceeded to explain that late the night before the Captain, returning from a party at the General's had told Barrett of his being put on the spot and asked to give a repeat performance of the sukiyaki party for the benefit of an official visiting party including Maury Maverick, former Congressman, one-time mayor of San Antonio and early New Dealer. So we had to plan another sukiyaki party for last night, and I spent a good part of the day (grouchy because [pg 2] I had been looking forward to sleeping late in the morning) making arrangements all over again for the entertainment. It was a better show, at that, than Friday night's - perhaps the best or second-best one we've had, but I didn't have much heart in it. We didn't have individual dates; MacQuarrie was commissioned to invite a bloc of dates and since it was more or less of a command performance he got quite a number of Red Cross girls. (God, but it'll be good to see what I suppose I think of as normal women again - really attractive ones - just attractive personalities - are few and far between out here.) I am really looking forward to the [pg 3] ship voyage home; in some ways it may be dull, and I may be overly impatient to get home, but I think I can clear away a lot of cobwebs during that interim and emerge from it fresh in body and spirit, for you. I'm not exactly jaded now, but I couldn't go on indefinitely like this without becoming so. Arthur Szathmary is pleasant - and stimulating, in a way very different but complementary to the way in which Barrett is stimulating- to have around. I'm going off to see a movie now, because it happens to be a good one (Gary Cooper in “Along Came Jones”) and will resume later. [pg 4] Tues. 7:30 am Well, it was a double feature with the Gary Cooper one second; so I saw the first and came early to bed for a much needed good night's sleep. We've a meeting at school in 10 minutes and I must leave now - I'll try to write you a decent letter soon, Sweetie. I had my first good, long dream about you in some time last night. Pretty soon now I won't have to rely on dreams to keep me happy. I love you, darling Warren |
