Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 307] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 259 Navy #3247 (Mil. Govt) FPO San Francisco Tuesday 26 June 1945 My dearest, I was awfully pleased to get three letters from you yesterday, and sorry to hear that it's butterflies again. I know that feeling - it's awfully disrupting - and I always avoid it if I can. Even when your message from Will arrived it didn't hit me that way, and I knew I wouldn't get excited until I actually had my orders and was on my way. Now I am fairly certain that Will's information while partly true, was false with respect to me. I was talking last night to our new exec., a Lt. Cmdr. Named Kenny who left Casa just about 8 days ago. He described the setup in general there, and how men where assigned to various companies and also various teams;; mentioned a number of the men who've left here in the past few months (one of the first of whom, a drip named Hawkins who was Public Safety Officer here, a conceited young ass and one of the sloppiest people I've ever known, is having himself a fine time at CASA lecturing to the thousand or so officers there); said that some forty men altogether, of whom 21 are Navy, are coming out here for 3 months of field training; about 7 Navy and 2 or 3 Army men are coming here to [pg 2] Tinian. He couldn't say for sure, of course, that some of us weren't being replaced too, but it seems highly probable that the two Education Officers you mention are a part of the same group. If that's the case, you mustn't blame Will too much - if his news had been true, I’d have been very glad for the sake of convenience and tying up many little loose ends to know as far in advance as possible. Last night we had English classes instead of the usual Monday night movie, because the movie area is still full of piles of coral which have to be levelled. I've just time now to catch the mailman. I love you, darling Warren P.S. I was waiting to send the enclosed until I had heard that you were not offended by the first batch. This is all I know now. |
