Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 34] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 2632 Woodley Place Thursday 12:20 a.m. [?] again! Hugh, Toni and I went to a movie, against all our better judgments - I had things I wanted to do (checks, note to Grandfather, letter to you), Toni had homework to do both tonight and before breakfast in the morning; Hugh had just taken a couple of books out of the lending library and was not very enthusiastic about going anyway; we flipped a coin about six times and it kept saying No - so we went, at nine o'clock (which is too late to start) to see Jean [Gabin?] in The Imposter. It stank. I do like being with Hugh and Toni, though, even on such an inauspicious occasion. Will Ebling was with us at dinner (and insisted on setting us up with cocktails) and [s?ed] his part - [wa?] [as?] rather simply. What he’d really like to be is a man with an estate and lots of family; but he says he hasn't got the guts to go out and get an aggressive business job, and just wants to settle comfortable into some government sinecure abroad, for a few years, anyhow. On the other hand he's not sure about breaking connections in this country by moving away with his family - and he doesn't really want to travel having had his fill of that by doing so since he was eight. Hugh would like to start, edit or work for a Far Eastern weekly magazine (of the Time variety, but more liberal in outlook and of course concerned primarily with the Eastern area) such as one which flourished in Shanghai for a quarter of a century until the war. That appeared to be only one [pg 2] of a number of ideas, none quite so definite as the simple fact that he wants to return to China and will presumably [?] repeating. I had another brief and trite but pleasant chat with Aunt Kate on the way upstairs just now on the subject of babies, children generally and the joys of parenthood, illustrated by anecdotes of hers about please she knows who have adopted children rather than not have any. I think my active interest in you and Wendy and my occasional little confidences to her on that very special subject give her real pleasure, and tonight she said that she would be sorry to see me go. Well, my darlings, I'll try to do better tomorrow! I love you dearly Warren Did you just get 2 of my 4 postcards? |
