Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 30] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | 2632 Woodley Place Saturday a.m. Jack and Simone 10113 Kinross Ave. Silver Spring, Md. - Hi Sweetie - Actually I'm beginning this in our new office amidst huge piles of books, desks, chairs, and men reading newspapers or puzzling as to where to find the work recently left off. The whole department moved bodily to another wing not far away, early yesterday afternoon. It was quite an outing, with everybody pitching in to assist the colored movers (who hauled tables, safes and files, and heavy stuff in general) by pushing castered revolving chairs full of books down the hallways. Not very much work other an agonizing will be done today, I imagine - still, that recalls of picture of Hugh who, yesterday when his desk happened to be the first to arrive here, spread out his books and maps and calmly went on with his work amidst the confusion. Sunday 5:15 On the train with trunk checked and time to spare (not so with money, though; didn't realize I was getting low but I'm down about $4 and will probably be cashing that check for $23 soon). This time there are plenty of seats; it's the trip up that's so crowded. Next week I shall probably take a train from W. which leaves [pg 2] 5 min later and arrives about 20 min later than the one I took yesterday and a week ago; it is much less crowded. (They stand on tracks using the same platform; people are admitted to both at the same time; yet ¾ of them pile on the one which avoids two extra stops and many of them stand all the way to save those few minutes!) Dearly beloved, this few hours with you were even nicer than last week's. I'm sorry I couldn't be longer, and leave us a little more free just to walk, or take a ferry ride, or ride aloud or do as we please - but no matter, we've enough to be thankful for. I forgot to tell Miss Couture about the possible arrival of a bookcase - that was the other thing. Here's my salad now (I'm on the diner, of course) and as the train is just about to leave I shall close and mail this in the special Union Station (Wash.) box for mail for [?] trains. Goodnight darling, and bless you Warren (Keep busy!) |
