Newsletter From COMING VOLUME 16— NUMBER 2 MAY 1963 1963 ALUMNI WEEKEND SCHEDULE HONORARY DEGREES TO BE CONFERRED BISHOP MIDDLETON NAMED COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER VV. Vernon Middleton, Resident Bishop of the West-ern Pennsylvania Area of The Methodist Church, will receive the honorary degree, Doctor of Letters, at the 115th Commencement of Lycoming College June 2, 1963. Bishop Middleton was elected to the episcopacy by the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference in Washington, D. C, June 16, 1960, following a distin-guished career in national mission work. Bishop Middleton was executive secretary of the Philadelphia Missionary and Church Extension Society of The Methodist Church from 1939 to 1944; execu-tive secretary of the Section of Church Extension of the Division of National Mis-sions from 1944 to 1954; executive secretary of the Division's Section of Home Missions from 1954 to 1956; and general secretary of the Division of National Mis-sions of the Methodist Board of Missions from 1956 to 1960. At present he is vice-chairman of the Division of Home Missions of the National Council of Churches, an interdenominational organization of 24 home mission societies. He has visited outpost mis-sions in Alaska, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, and is an authority on the religious and economic conditions of American Indians, migrant workers, and other minori-ty groups in the United States. Born on Christmas Daw 1902, in Baltimore. Mary-land, Bishop Middleton was educated at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute; Dickinson College, Carlisle (A.B. degree); New York University in New York City (M.A. degree); Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New fersey (B.D. degree); and Drew Uni-versity (Ph.D. degree). In 1961, his alma mater. Dickinson, conferred the honorary degree. Doctor ol Divinity, on him. He was ordained a member on trial in the Phila-delphia Annual Conference ol The Methodist Church in 1928 and admitted into lull membership in 1930. He served as pastor ol several Pennsylvania churches including Germantown, Canadensis and Narheth. Bishop Middleton has been a member ol the Board ol Directors ol Lvcoming College since 1900. VERNON MIDDLETON FIVE TO BE HONORED AT 115th COMMENCEMENT At the 115th Annual Commencement of Lycoming College on Sunday, June 2, 1963, five honorary degrees will be conferred. Bishop W. Vernon Middleton will deliver the Commencement address to the graduating class and receive the honorary degree, Doctor of Let-ters. President D. Frederick Wertz will preach the Baccalaureate sermon Sunday morning at Pine Street Methodist Church. Honorary degrees will also be conferred upon Dr. Roger S. Firestone, Dr. Herbert M. Gould, Mr. Tsing- Yao Lea and the Rev. Harry N. Peelor. Alumnus Honored Dr. Herbert M. Gould will have the honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, conferred upon him at the 115th Com-mencement of Lycoming College. Born October 20, 1902, in Philadelphia, he was educated in the public schools of that city and Lower Merion Township. An alumnus, he graduated from the Seminary in the Class of '22. He sub-sequently attended Wes-leyan University in Middle-town, Connecticut, and Washington and Lee Uni-versity in Lexington, Vir-ginia, from which he re-ceived the degree Bachelor of Laws in 1925. A year earlier he was admitted to practice law in the state ol Virginia and was appointed Assistant to the Common-wealths attorney of Rockbridge County. In 1927 he was admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and ap-pointed to the legal staff of General Motors Corpora-tion in New York. He rose to the position ol Secretary of General Motors Holding Corporation and finally was appointed General Manager of the Motors Hold-ing Division ot CMC. In 1959, alter 33 years of ser-vice, he received a disabilitv retirement from CMC. In 1900 Dr. Gould was admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court ol the United States. Last year lie was appointed National Arbitrator by the American Arbitration Association ol New York. Dr. Gould holds the houorarv degree.
